About the Role

Oversee all aspects of the daily activities program to ensure it is diversified and engaging for residents. Develop goals, objectives, and budgets, and guide department personnel and volunteers to maximize programs and maintain resident contact. Function as a community liaison.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in bi-weekly staff meetings as a department head.
  • Determine which residents are medically permitted to participate in the activities program.
  • Coordinate the activities program with other resident care services.
  • Contact community resources for in-facility or off-site activities.
  • Recruit, orient, train, and supervise volunteers to assist with the activities program.
  • Post the monthly and daily schedule of activities in accessible locations.
  • Plan a tentative monthly schedule of activities at least one month in advance.
  • Maintain and provide monthly statistical reports on resident participation in activities.
  • Order departmental supplies, craft/woodworking supplies, etc., through proper channels.
  • Maintain quarterly progress notes in resident charts regarding adjustment, participation, and enjoyment of activities.
  • Write transfer and discharge notes in resident charts.
  • Participate in periodic review and evaluation teams to identify resident problems/needs and formulate goals.
  • Report any observed unusual resident behavior to the nursing supervisor.
  • Encourage social communication among residents through group activities and recreation.
  • Encourage residents to participate in religious activities.
  • Provide library service for residents in cooperation with the local library, including talking books for blind residents.
  • Develop and submit a yearly budget, justifying proposed activities.
  • Requisition and purchase supplies, equipment, and materials within budgetary control.
  • Interview and select a licensed part-time hairdresser when a position opens.
  • Supervise activities and direct or appoint assistants, volunteers, or residents to lead certain programs.
  • Interview and assist in the selection of activities staff, evaluating them at least yearly.
  • Develop and review/revise activities program policies and procedures annually.
  • Develop and review/revise written job descriptions annually.
  • Participate in applicable in-service education programs and workshops.
  • Establish residents’ former and current interests through interviews within one month of admission.
  • Develop programs tailored to residents’ interests, needs, and capabilities.
  • Periodically review resident participation in activities and revise care plans as necessary.
  • Supervise weekly shopping for residents’ needs.
  • Orient new employees to the activities department.
  • Write letters to residents’ families at least twice yearly to encourage support and inform them of special activities.
  • Contact community resources for donations for resident gifts (e.g., Bingo, birthdays, Christmas).
  • Preview the monthly activities calendar with the dietary technician to plan refreshments.
  • Stimulate resident involvement in planning and participation in activities programs at monthly resident council meetings.
  • Reserve necessary transportation for large group activities within budget limits.
  • Maintain professional and effective relationships with staff, residents, families, and the public.

Requirements

  • Must be available to work more than eight (8) hours per day or more than forty (40) hours per week.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary or directed by supervisor, department head, and/or administration.
