About the Role

Checkr is seeking a Director of Tax to establish and lead the company's tax function. This pivotal role involves managing the entire tax lifecycle and acting as a strategic advisor on M&A, transfer pricing, and tax planning. Reporting to the Controller, you will collaborate closely with Legal, Accounting, FP&S, Treasury, and Corporate Development. This is an ideal opportunity for a tax leader eager to build a function from the ground up and prepare a growing company for public offering.

Responsibilities

  • Own Checkr's global tax strategy across direct and indirect tax, including federal, state, local, and international jurisdictions.
  • Build the tax function, team, and vendor ecosystem to support the global tax strategy.
  • Lead the quarterly and annual income tax provision process, including documentation and disclosures.
  • Oversee all direct tax matters, such as income tax compliance, transfer pricing, R&D credits, and tax attribute planning.
  • Manage indirect tax strategy and compliance, including sales and use tax.
  • Partner with Corporate Development on M&A tax due diligence, deal structuring, entity rationalization, and post-close integration.
  • Serve as the trusted tax advisor to Legal, Accounting, FP&S, and Treasury on entity structuring, ETR forecasting, cash tax planning, and intercompany matters.
  • Prepare the tax function for public company readiness, including implementing SOX-compliant processes.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of progressive tax experience, with a mix of Big 4 and in-house roles.
  • Deep expertise in U.S. federal and state income tax, ASC 740, and indirect tax compliance.
  • Experience leading the tax provision process end-to-end, including coordinating with external auditors.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or leading tax workstreams in M&A transactions.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, particularly with Legal, Accounting, and FP&A.
  • An A-player mindset with a strong bias for action: you raise the bar, move with urgency, stay resilient through ambiguity, and take ownership to deliver meaningful outcomes.
