About the Role

The Barn Manager is a leadership position responsible for overseeing the Barn Department, including managing the Herd Manager and Wrangler/Guide team members. This role is crucial to the direction of Red Horse Mountain Ranch, ensuring a healthy and well-functioning barn department while prioritizing guest experience and team member development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and train Wrangler/Guide team members on procedures, policies, and ranch values.
  • Conduct regular meetings with team members, providing constructive feedback and addressing issues.
  • Mediate conflicts among staff and escalate serious issues to the Ranch Manager.
  • Document performance feedback and corrections given to team members.
  • Seek feedback on leadership and departmental improvements.
  • Collaborate with other managers to ensure smooth inter-departmental operations.
  • Foster unity within and between departments.
  • Welcome and interact with guests, setting a positive example for guest relations.
  • Ensure a high standard of guest experience, creating comfortable, safe, and memorable moments.
  • Accommodate guest requests and proactively address any issues affecting their experience.
  • Manage and communicate with the Herd Manager to ensure herd health and adequacy for operations.
  • Assist in the approval of horses for guest use and various riding programs.
  • Participate in the research and purchasing of horses, adhering to legal requirements.
  • Oversee daily barn operations, including checklists, project assignments, and punctuality.
  • Ensure general maintenance, cleanliness, and upkeep of barn-related facilities and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of barn items and ensure timely completion of chores and projects.
  • Oversee safety of guests and guides.
  • Oversee daily guided activities, ensuring safety and proper setup.
  • Participate as a guide in various activities.
  • Organize and manage seasonal setup, upkeep, and breakdown of activities.
  • Ensure punctual start times for all guided activities.
  • Assign appropriate guide staff to activities.
  • Approve guests for advanced riding and guides for leading activities.
  • Approve any changes to the guest schedule with the Ranch Manager.
  • Process job applications, conduct interviews, and manage the hiring process.
  • Build a pipeline of potential candidates.
  • Collect employment information, background checks, and arrange for new staff arrivals.
  • Create and manage schedules for the barn team, coordinating with other departments.
  • Assist with evening entertainment and other departments as needed.
  • Manage inventory of all barn department items and track budget.
  • Research and prioritize purchases based on inventory needs and budget.
  • Approve and track all barn-related expenses and receipts.
  • Maintain vendor relationships.
  • Balance working alongside the team with administrative duties.
  • Focus on long-term planning, maintenance projects, and organizing workstations.
  • Schedule outside contractors for services.
  • Assist the Herd Manager with feeding and vetting schedules.
  • Update manuals with improved procedures and policies.
  • Attend and participate in all required meetings.
  • Represent ranch core values and drive the ranch's purpose, vision, and mission.

Requirements

  • Must complete and pass the Wilderness First Responder certification through NOLS in the first year of hire.
  • Must complete the Horse Safety class through the Dude Ranch Foundation upon hire.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies and facilitate the plan of action.
  • Must be responsible for all receipts related to the barn budget.
  • Must use shared notes for discussion with ranch managers at weekly meetings.
  • Must maintain good relationships with all barn-related vendors.
  • Must follow shut down and deep clean procedures for the barn.
  • Must organize various work stations and create systems to improve flow, efficiency, and tidiness.
  • Must schedule outside contractors for needed services.
  • Must complete daily checklists.
  • Must help in other departments as needed.
  • Must work with other managers to improve systems and communication.
  • Must attend and actively participate in weekly and annual meetings.
  • Must be able to have difficult conversations with guests and staff.
  • Must have good speaking and listening skills.
  • Must be willing to learn and grow in communication skills.
  • Must be able to show strong safety for riders and horses.
  • Must be able to show proof of First Aid / CPR certification or pass certification on arrival.
  • Must be able to communicate kindly and professionally with team members, community members, and guests.
  • Must exhibit a patient and positive attitude with animals and people.
  • This position also completes the tasks required in the job description of a Wrangler.
