About the Role
Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) are crucial to Beacon's AI transformation, bridging the gap between our AI-native operating platform and real-world business operations. This role involves leading the FDE function, defining its strategy, managing capacity allocation across product teams, and ensuring the successful implementation of our platform within vertical market software businesses. The goal is to drive efficiency, reduce deployment time, and enhance the capabilities of client engineers.
Responsibilities
- Define and own the FDE doctrine, ensuring engagements are scoped with clear deliverables and contribute to the platform's knowledge base.
- Manage capacity allocation of engineering resources across portfolio companies, prioritizing based on business outcomes and strategic value.
- Foster strong partnerships with product leaders within each vertical, managing a shared backlog and ensuring technical sequencing aligns with platform goals.
- Establish and maintain a feedback loop from field deployments back to the platform team, identifying patterns and driving improvements.
- Hire, mentor, and grow a team of senior generalist engineers in Toronto and San Francisco.
- Act as a player-coach, carrying a significant deployment yourself to ensure hands-on contribution and leadership.
- Ensure every engagement contributes to the portco's own engineers becoming more capable.
Requirements
- Experience building and leading forward-deployed, solutions, or embedded engineering functions, particularly with AI or data platforms.
- Proven ability to transition a team from individual goal-setting to a shared backlog and standards without alienating team members.
- Strong generalist engineering skills, with the ability to quickly understand and contribute to existing codebases.
- Experience shipping LLM-native software in production, including implementation of evaluation, autonomy gating, and outcome tracking.
- Demonstrated operator instincts, including understanding P&Ls and aligning technical deployments with business incentives.
- Experience making tough allocation decisions and communicating them clearly to stakeholders.
- Proficiency in clear, transparent, and asynchronous communication, with a focus on documented decisions.
- Experience with Palantir-style FDE roles is a bonus.
- Experience in private equity, holdco operations, or vertical SaaS is a bonus.
- Experience migrating a portfolio of legacy systems to shared infrastructure is a bonus.
