About the Role

Project Open Hand (POH) has been delivering meals with love to the critically ill and elderly for 35 years. The Manager, Grants will lead the management of POH's corporate, foundation, and government relationship portfolio to maximize philanthropic investment. This role will assist in developing and executing strategies to increase exposure, engagement, and fundraising success, with a primary focus on the San Francisco Bay Area institutional giving environment, expanding to a national reach as the organization evolves. The Grants Manager reports to the Vice President, Fund Development & Community Affairs and will oversee all development functions related to managing institutional prospects.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and implementing strategies for attracting new relationships and increased commitment from assigned constituents.
  • Support the stewardship of current donors, including the fulfillment of sponsorship benefits.
  • Maintain the grants calendar for annual operating and project-specific efforts.
  • Lead efforts to discover, identify, understand, and match POH's needs with the goals of foundations, corporations, and government entities.
  • Initiate opportunities for Board members and high-level staff to interact with current and prospective constituents.
  • Write compelling letters of inquiry, develop, write, and submit competitive proposals in a timely manner.
  • Manage Grants Associates, Grant Writing Consultants, Interns, and Volunteers contributing to grant relationship goals.
  • Manage financial resources for the grants area within the Development Department.
  • Develop grant funding strategies and solicitation plans with Executive leadership.
  • Conduct ongoing prospect research and funder landscape analysis.
  • Track grant outcomes and portfolio performance to support future fundraising strategy.
  • Prepare and lead briefing meetings, ensuring alignment with donor relationship and moves management strategies.
  • Communicate effectively and build productive relationships with program leaders across the organization to develop proposals and fulfill grant requirements.
  • Monitor secured grants for successful implementation and outcomes-based reporting.
  • Steward relationships with funders.
  • Work with the Development Database Administrator (DA) to seek cause-related marketing and branding opportunities for in-kind gifts, gifts of assets, or other contributions.
  • Manage the operational procedures of the Grant Program in collaboration with the DA, including overseeing financial and gift processing systems, implementing recognition agreements, and maintaining records of donor contacts.
  • Monitor media and funding trends related to corporate, foundation, and government sectors.
  • Contribute to overall Development Department efforts.
  • Represent POH at industry events and donor gatherings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as communications, journalism, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of Development experience, including one or more areas of interest: Healthcare, HIV/AIDS, Seniors/Aging, and Nutrition.
  • Experience in foundation, corporate, and government grant seeking, particularly in Northern California.
  • Familiarity with project management and tools.
  • Experience in budget preparation, analysis, and monitoring.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Outlook) and ability to learn new applications.
  • Proven writing and editing skills in various formats and voices.
  • Outstanding verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Leadership qualities including presence, confidence, judgment, and integrity.
  • Ability to synthesize complex ideas into compelling narratives.
  • Ability to understand and comply with gift acceptance policies and procedures.
  • Ensures ethical compliance as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Curious and energetic self-starter who willingly takes direction when required.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with care.
  • Strong public service ethic.
  • Knowledge of health promotion programming or experience in similar nonprofit fields.
  • Familiarity with fundraising and CRM software, including Salesforce, and Instrumentl.
