About the Role
Operates all types of motor vehicles and heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, forklifts, and trucks. Transports garden officials and materials to meetings and appointments outside the garden.
Responsibilities
- Operates all types of vehicles, including fleet vehicles, passenger cars, trams, trucks with plows, forklifts, front-end loaders, and trucks with trailers.
- Drives a truck or fleet vehicle carrying employees and materials to and from work locations.
- Loads, offloads, and transports materials, equipment, and plants within and outside the garden.
- Picks up supplies, materials, and plants from vendors.
- Drives NYBG staff to off-site events.
- Operates heavy equipment for snow and debris removal.
- Assists in the removal of heavy trees and shrubs.
- Operates equipment in the Green Materials Recycling Area, including a Tub Grinder and Soil/Compost Screener.
- Schedules and performs routine maintenance on all vehicles and equipment.
- Checks overall vehicle condition and reports mechanical defects.
- Checks tires, oil, and fuel levels.
- Verifies proper operation of lights, horn, and brakes.
- Cleans vehicle interiors and exteriors.
- Changes tires or wheels as needed.
- Reports any vehicle accidents.
- Operates motor equipment mounted on or transported by the vehicle.
- Monitors for traffic hazards while labor force performs emergency repairs.
- Maintains responsibility for tools, supplies, materials, and equipment in the assigned vehicle.
- Transports collectors and coin boxes to and from collection areas.
- Prepares trip reports.
- May dispatch personnel, motor vehicles, and equipment in a small garage.
- May perform additional duties such as running errands, answering phones, and delivering mail/packages when not driving.
Requirements
- Must pass a practical exam.
- Must possess a Driver’s License valid in the State of New York.
- Ability to maintain medical certification per Commercial Driver’s License requirements.
- May be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and weather emergencies.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
