About the Role
This tutor role supports collaborative efforts between The University Learning Center (ULC) and The New School Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) to provide tailored support to students through one-on-one tutoring, skill-building workshops, and other resources. Tutors help students become stronger and more independent learners, enabling them to succeed in achieving their academic goals.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary tutor for the HEOP Program, assisting students with writing projects and academic skill-building, including presentations and time management.
- Provide writing assistance, including brainstorming, outlining, argument development, revision, citation, plagiarism avoidance, AI use, cover letters, resumes, personal statements, theses, dissertations, and research proposals.
- Offer art and design feedback based on tutor expertise, if requested by students.
- Lead writing and time management tutoring sessions for undergraduate and ULC visiting students.
- Help students develop academic skills and increase awareness of university resources, connecting them to other departments as needed.
- Develop and lead skill-building workshops, study halls, and create informational handouts.
- Create a professional and welcoming environment by respecting students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences.
- Complete administrative tasks, including session descriptions and daily attendance summaries.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a relevant program at The New School.
- At least one year of tutoring experience or teaching writing/English in a formal academic setting.
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Possess excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrate reliability and punctuality.
- Commit to 6 or more tutoring hours per week.
