About the Role

The ACLU of Northern California's Legal Advocacy Department invites law and policy graduate students to apply for its Criminal Law & Immigration Project internship. This internship offers a rewarding learning experience for students willing to work with intensity and focus, and is ideal for those who are enthusiastic, creative, and detail-oriented with strong research, writing, and oral communication skills. Applicants should articulate a commitment to social justice and the ideals of the ACLU.

Responsibilities

• Participate in one or more of the team’s core streams of work: Prosecutorial Accountability, Police Accountability, Decarceration, and Immigrants’ Rights.
• Conduct legal and policy research and analysis.
• Assist in authoring advocacy materials, portions of court documents, and pre-litigation demand letters.
• Assist with legislative or other local campaigns.
• Attend and participate in hearings at the state and county level.
• Attend meetings with policy-makers and advocates.
• Attend appellate arguments, trial court proceedings, and depositions.
• Participate in departmental meetings to discuss litigation and policy strategies.
• Work across the Department’s three broad issue areas, including Democracy, Speech & Technology and Appeals & Special Litigation, as assignments arise.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in law school or a graduate program in criminal justice, public policy, or a related field.
• Demonstrate a passion for criminal justice.
• Demonstrate a commitment to work for social justice and the ideals of the ACLU.
• Applications must include a Cover Letter, Resume, and Writing Sample in PDF format.
• Cover Letter must include a statement about why you want to work on the particular Program/Issue Area, your preference and willingness to be based in each of the three office locations, and how you encountered the internship opening.
• Applications from undergraduate students are not considered.
