About the Role
This four-month co-op term (January to April 2027) offers motivated and curious Taxation Interns hands-on exposure to diverse businesses and investment sectors. The role provides an opportunity to explore tax areas, build practical skills, and understand the function of a corporate tax department within a financial organization.
Responsibilities
- Gain hands-on tax experience across partnerships, trusts and corporations.
- Develop technical skills by applying accounting and tax concepts to real-world transactions and financial statements.
- Build Excel skills by creating, improving and maintaining tax calculations, provisions and working papers.
- Learn how a corporate tax function operates and its interaction with accounting, investments and other business areas.
- Contribute to meaningful work with real deadlines and deliverables.
- Work directly with experienced professionals to learn their approach to complex tax and business issues.
- Develop foundational experience for a future career in tax, accounting, finance or investments.
- Assist with preparing and filing partnership, trust and corporate income tax returns.
- Perform financial statement and account reconciliations to support tax filings and calculations.
- Assist with the quarterly tax provision for the parent company.
- Support tax payment calculations and track balances for affiliated companies.
- Help manage and meet various tax filing and payment deadlines.
- Support tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities.
- Research and help respond to tax-related questions from internal teams.
- Create, develop and improve Excel-based tax calculations, provision models and working papers.
- Identify opportunities to make existing tax processes more efficient and effective.
- Help develop clear tax summaries, templates and materials for senior management.
Requirements
- Currently in the third or fourth year of an undergraduate program, or an MBA program, with a focus on Accounting, Taxation, Finance or a related field.
- Interest in pursuing a CPA designation.
- Strong understanding of fundamental accounting concepts.
- Some knowledge of Canadian taxation or tax preparation through coursework or previous work experience.
- Comfortable working in Microsoft Excel and interested in continually improving and automating working papers.
- Enjoy working with numbers and analyzing financial information.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in producing high-quality work.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable asking questions and communicating with different people across an organization.
- Curious, proactive and willing to learn.
- Experience with Taxprep or other tax preparation software is an asset but not required.
