About the Role

This role is responsible for creating and maintaining a healthful, safe, and therapeutic environment for children, implementing individual treatment goals, and providing positive role models.

Responsibilities

• Know the whereabouts of children assigned to the cottage at all times and report missing children immediately.
• Conduct bed checks every 15 minutes and report unusual activities.
• Provide input to treatment team meetings for planning child treatment goals and techniques.
• Implement individual treatment plans with each child.
• Act as a positive role model for children by engaging in activities productively and in support of accepted societal norms and values.
• Instruct, guide, and assist children in areas such as organization of clothing, personal health, grooming, hygiene, social conduct, eating and sleeping habits, and maintaining clean rooms.
• Help children develop trusting relationships by actively engaging in activities, expressing care through role modeling, life space interviews, and constructive discipline.
• Be present with children during waking hours and accompany them to meals and activities.
• Help children abide by established cottage rules and Agency policies.
• Provide support to children in crises using therapeutic crisis intervention techniques.
• Supervise and assist children in performing house jobs.
• Inventory and mark children's clothing and personal belongings.
• Collect and store clothing and belongings of children who are absent without leave (AWOL).
• Be informed about children's health needs and administer medications as directed.
• Store medications in locked areas and cabinets.
• Refer children to the Health Services Department for medical problems and treatment.
• Help evaluate children's performance on the daily level system and review with children to encourage progress.
• Prepare written incident reports on critical incidents and forward them to the Cottage Manager.
• Provide pertinent observations and assessments of children to unit/cottage meetings.
• Transport children to off-campus appointments.
• Make appropriate entries into the cottage log concerning children's observations.
• Complete the cottage log census form in the morning.
• Adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and philosophy of The William George Agency and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.
• Adhere to and perform all duties in accordance with every safety standard, practice, and policy of the William George Agency.

Requirements

• Must successfully complete all required background checks, including NYS Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR), Multi-State Sex Offender Registry (SOR), NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) fingerprinting, NYS Justice Center Staff Exclusion List (SEL), NYS OMIG Medicaid Exclusion List, out-of-state child abuse register inquiry (if applicable), NYS License Event Notification Service (LENS), and Office of Inspector General (OIG).
• Must successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI).

• The William George Agency for Children’s Services is a private not-for-profit residential treatment center located on a 650-acre campus in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.
