About the Role
The Counselor provides support and assistance to clients in Progress programs, advocating for and responding to their treatment and rehabilitation needs.
Responsibilities
- Conduct intake interviews with prospective clients.
- Orient new clients to the program and facility.
- Respond to psychiatric and/or medical emergency situations and perform crisis intervention.
- Assist clients in evacuating the facility during emergencies.
- Develop treatment plans with client participation.
- Communicate with referral sources and other treatment personnel.
- Complete intake and discharge paperwork and maintain client progress records.
- Initiate and participate in discharge planning.
- Lead or co-lead group sessions, including house meetings.
- Assume primary case coordinating responsibilities for clients.
- Relay clinical and house-status information to other staff.
- Monitor and record client medications.
- Participate in meal planning, preparation, and join clients for meals.
- Attend staff meetings, supervision sessions, and case consultation meetings.
- Consult with leadership on case review, medications, and group dynamics.
- Investigate and perform minor repairs and cleaning of the physical plant.
- Report suspected abuse of clients to appropriate agencies.
- Promote the social rehabilitation philosophy.
- Work overnight, awake and alert shifts.
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and agency policies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Inform leadership of any personal events that may affect job performance.
- Lead and/or participate in outings and recreational activities.
- Shop for groceries and household items with clients.
- Drive clients to treatment-related destinations.
- Attend programmatic and administrative meetings as a representative of the program.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in a mental health related field (experience may be substituted).
- Specific experience in residential treatment and/or knowledge of social rehabilitation is preferred.
- At least one year's experience in a community mental health program is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, clients, and other providers orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate good judgment and emotional stability.
- Ability to negotiate several flights of stairs multiple times during each work shift.
- Ability to lift and carry 20 lb. packages multiple times during the work shift.
- Demonstrate ongoing clearance with the California State Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division.
- Maintain training certification and demonstrated capacity to perform basic First Aid and CPR.
- Basic word processing skills.
- Maintain computer requirements of the City and County of San Francisco Community Behavioral Health Services.
