About the Role
The Ontario Nurses’ Association (ONA) is seeking a Media Relations Officer to join their Communications Team. This role will anchor the union’s media relations, support broader team initiatives with a flexible approach, and work collaboratively with leadership and staff to support daily union activities.
Responsibilities
- Monitor daily media requests and respond promptly.
- Produce and distribute a daily media scan.
- Gather and refine background information and messaging with internal experts.
- Develop and maintain media contacts and new media sources.
- Pitch stories to journalists to drive proactive coverage.
- Provide recommendations for garnering media coverage.
- Research, write, and produce media and public relations materials.
- Create video and social media content.
- Develop and coordinate implementation of communications and media relations plans.
- Plan, coordinate, and execute communications and media events.
- Develop strategic public relations messaging.
- Monitor sentiment and support issue management.
- Provide training in media relations and public speaking.
- Ensure adherence to the spokesperson policy.
- Track, analyze, and report on media relations performance metrics.
- Ensure adherence to ONA’s brand voice and communications style.
- Review and edit organizational materials.
- Coordinate with allied organizations on joint initiatives.
- Coordinate with vendors and agencies.
- Ensure accuracy and attention to detail in all deliverables.
- Ensure deliverables meet best practice standards, AODA, and CASL.
- Write communications pieces for internal and external audiences.
- Produce or oversee design production for print and digital materials.
- Develop and plan internal communications.
- Monitor and respond to organizational email.
- Write and contribute to ONA’s digital magazine, F-Word.
- Provide communications support for campaigns and bargaining.
- Write and produce member email and text message updates.
- Provide/coordinate photography and videography.
- Manage social media accounts and develop content.
- Produce website content and updates.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree or advanced diploma in journalism.
- Five years of professional full-time experience leading media relations and public relations.
- Strong experience planning and executing broader organizational communications.
- Experience and familiarity with unions, health care, and political environments.
- Expert writer and editor.
- Experience with new media content creation.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments with strict deadlines.
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
- Highly adaptable and works well independently and with cross-functional teams.
- Excellent communications skills including proactive engagement and collaboration.
- Ability to travel across Ontario and potentially outside of Ontario.
- Must be able to travel.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Must have access to an automobile for business use.
- Flexible scheduling for evening/weekend work may be required.
