About the Role
The Director of Building Security provides oversight of the shelter’s security operational functions, supporting the efficient and satisfactory living and work environment of the facility at the Lighthouse shelter location in Long Island City, Queens.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring the building is maintained in inspection ready conditions, clean, and in working order.
- Ensuring clients live in a safe environment.
- Directly supervising security staff (Shift Supervisors and Safety Monitors) and Residential Aide/Food Service Workers.
- Establishing and communicating clear expectations and priorities for the department.
- Ensuring development of direct reports by collaborating with Program Director, AVP of Facilities, and CQI Director on training needs.
- Collaborating with the Maintenance Director on interviewing, hiring recommendations, performance evaluations, and feedback.
- Collaborating with the Maintenance Director to prepare staff for required credentialing (e.g., food handlers’ certification, CPR, F-02 and F-89).
- Monitoring and directing security and Residential Aide/Food Service Worker staff to ensure compliance with program services.
- Meeting regularly with staff to discuss issues, concerns, and program needs.
- Liaising with building ownership regarding building security.
- Reviewing feedback from inspections by government authorities and establishing plans of correction with building ownership.
- Conducting coordinated client inspections to ensure a clean and safe environment.
- Reporting offline units and ensuring their expeditious reconciliation.
- Ensuring maintenance cleans and prepares units for new clients within the prescribed timeframe.
- Overseeing and training staff in the Security Operations Department on DHS CARES procedures.
- Maintaining open and accurate communication with the DHS and HERO unit.
- Ensuring Food Service Workers document food temperatures and meal counts.
- Ensuring Security Operations staff respond to clients professionally and provide necessary support.
- Administering 24-hour crisis intervention protocols.
- Encouraging staff/client communication and responding to client needs.
- Ensuring a safe and secure environment for staff and clients.
- Managing asset management and overseeing the central storage facility.
- Ensuring consistent communication of policies and procedures within the department.
- Conducting regularly scheduled meetings with Security Operations staff.
- Ensuring adequate shift coverage with minimal overtime, except in emergencies.
- Notifying the Regional Director and AVP of Facilities of overtime requests.
- Ensuring the facility is secured, access control is maintained, and security systems are operational.
- Engaging with other department managers for service delivery improvement.
- Participating in required agency and program meetings.
- Maintaining a good neighborly policy with stakeholders and community members.
- Attending OATH hearings as needed.
- Developing and implementing management systems utilizing SWOT analysis for the department.
- Maintaining a system for regular review of policies, procedures, and practices.
- Monitoring the department’s exposure to non-compliance matters and making adjustments.
- Reviewing the department’s expenditures for sound fiscal management.
- Ensuring the delivery of DHS correspondence.
- Reviewing and certifying the accuracy and timeliness of Nightly Signature Rosters.
- Ensuring timely collection, preparation, and analysis of client and program information for reports.
- Ensuring critical file binders are updated regularly.
- Ensuring client intake and discharge documentation is completed thoroughly and timely.
- Ensuring data is entered into CARES and archived according to standards.
- Analyzing problems and preparing reports.
- Approving requisitions.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and/or a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in Building Security and Operations.
- Four years' experience in Building Operations with hands-on management skills and direct experience in staff supervision.
- Valid New York State Driver’s License.
- F80 Certification.
- Proven contract/vendor relationship problem and resolution solver.
- Proficiency in Work Order Systems, New Security Management Systems, and Fire Safety Systems.
- Ability to conduct instructor training.
- Self-guided with minimum supervision.
