About the Role

The Senior Project Engineer will be responsible for the design and engineering of utility-scale solar PV and energy storage projects throughout their development and construction phases. This role involves leading and supporting engineering activities across the entire project lifecycle, including design development, peer reviews, energy modeling, equipment selection, and specification preparation. The position also requires providing technical input for pricing estimates, RFP responses, permitting, design drafting, and M&A project evaluations. Additionally, the role encompasses engineering management, contract document development and review, technical negotiation participation, procurement specification preparation, punch list development, and ongoing technical support during project execution. This role provides technical leadership by defining design roadmaps, establishing development engineering standards, and mentoring junior engineers, while managing complex priorities and communicating progress effectively with distributed teams.

Responsibilities

Lead and support engineering activities across the full project lifecycle, including design development and peer reviews, energy and performance modeling, equipment selection and specifications, and preparation of engineering calculations.
Provide technical inputs to support Engineer Procure Construct (EPC) pricing estimates, RFP responses, permitting applications, design drafting, and technical due diligence for M&A project evaluations.
Manage engineering management, development and review of contract documents, participation in technical negotiations, preparation of procurement specifications, punch list development, and delivery of ongoing technical support throughout project execution.
Define design-phase roadmaps, establish development engineering standards and processes, and train and mentor junior engineers.
Manage complex, multi-project priorities and communicate progress to the Senior Manager of Mega and M&A Engineering.
Perform full technical due diligence and risk assessment for M&A projects.
Conduct full project design evaluation to identify red flags and fatal flaws.
Redesign and update layouts, energy production estimates, EPC cost estimates, and equipment selections.
Coordinate with M&A developer to complete necessary RFP response documentation.
Design for select projects up to 30% electrical, civil, structural, and mechanical.
Develop scopes of work and technical contract exhibits.
Seek and evaluate proposals for engineering services.
Manage engineering consultants and EPC contractors to develop project construction drawings and support materials.
Perform technical project due diligence and project engineering design reviews.
Coordinate feedback from internal stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) on design reviews.
Value engineer PV and BESS system designs to maximize reliability and reduce overall project cost.
Establish/review technical specifications of owner furnished equipment in coordination with Procurement and Sourcing.
Respond to contractor requests for information (RFIs).
Perform quality assurance (QA)/ quality control (QC) checks in the field.
Develop punchlists.
Support commissioning activities with internal Technology/Commissioning teams and external stakeholders.
Review commissioning reports and analyze system performance.
Support internal Owner’s Engineering team through financing activities.
Support Operations/Asset Management teams to resolve technical issues at operating sites.
Assist Development and Project Management teams with budget development and key financial inputs.
Develop and implement technical solutions to region/market specific requirements in coordination with Director of Engineering, Mega Projects.
Contribute to process improvement initiatives for the development and execution of safe, quality, and high-performance projects.
Develop inter-engineering processes for sharing information and best practices among the team.
Manage relationships with 3rd party engineering consultants and firms utilized by the team.
Mentor and train the team on changing trends in technology, best practices, and safety.
Participate in AES Clean Energy’s growth planning process by contributing to process improvement task forces and other strategic planning activities.

Requirements

Undergraduate degree in Engineering or equivalent technical field
5+ years of professional experience in solar PV system design, development, construction, and analysis preferred
Proficiency in PV system design, including 1-line and 3-line diagram conventions, NEC design requirements, overcurrent protection sizing, utility disconnecting means requirements, equipment selection, grounding methodologies, and short circuit current analysis
Experience with medium voltage collector system design
Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work in a team environment
Proficient with MS Office Suite
Graduate degree in Engineering
PE license
PMP Certification
NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification
2-5 years of experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems design and modeling
Experience with MATLAB, ETAP, SKM, and other advanced modeling tools
Substation/HV design experience
NFPA 70E, OSHA 10-hr or comparable job-site safety certification
