About the Role
The Respiratory Care Practitioner provides restorative and interventional care to patients requiring respiratory support for chronic or acute conditions. They administer and monitor various treatment modalities, acting as a member of the critical care team for resuscitation and as a resource to other healthcare providers in pulmonary medicine. Responsibilities include performing EKGs, ABGs, and other related duties.
Responsibilities
- Reviews physician orders prior to administering therapeutic modalities and monitors for appropriateness.
- Performs patient assessment before and after therapies according to established policies.
- Administers respiratory care modalities according to departmental policies and documents patient response.
- Evaluates patient response to therapy and immediately refers patients with adverse responses to appropriate personnel.
- Suggests modifications to the treatment plan based on patient assessment.
- Participates in patient/family education regarding therapy goals, medication use, breathing techniques, and equipment.
- Gathers and updates clinical data for patient treatment each shift according to policy.
- Utilizes the clinical information system.
- Demonstrates knowledge of equipment operation and troubleshooting.
- Performs emergency resuscitation, airway management, and use of emergency equipment.
- Provides respiratory care and support for patients from NICU through adult, including during transport.
- Provides support during oxygen system failures.
- Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI).
- Performs EKGs.
- Collects arterial blood specimens for analysis.
- Performs diagnostic testing and completes necessary paperwork.
- Assesses, manages, and educates patients in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program with interdisciplinary team members and the Medical Director.
- Operates all equipment safely according to manufacturer specifications.
- Follows procedures for safe patient interactions and body mechanics.
- Obtains and maintains required vaccines and immunizations.
- Adheres to safety procedures for handling hazardous materials and blood-borne pathogens.
- Meets performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff/self-development.
- Performs other duties as assigned to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited School of Respiratory Therapy.
- Credential of Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) with 18 months to obtain RRT credential.
- Cross-training in other departments may require additional certification and training.
- May begin as an entry-level practitioner with no experience, but must successfully attain necessary skills during orientation and probationary period.
- Current State of Connecticut License is required.
- Cross-trained staff in Cardiology, Pulmonary Lab, and/or Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
- Staff voluntarily cross-training into Cardiology and/or Pulmonary will be required to precept with trained staff.
- Acquire skills in Pulmonary Function Testing, Methacholine Challenges, Cardiac Stress Testing, EKG/Holter/Event Monitoring, and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.
- ACLS and Certification in Cardiology required within one year of completed cross-training in Cardiology.
- Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) Certification required/Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) Certification preferred within 6 months of completed cross-training to the Pulmonary Function Lab.
- After 6 months of voluntary training in the PFT lab, CPFT credentials required, RPFT preferred.
