About the Role

Collaborate with the building envelope expertise team to evaluate product and system performance in lab conditions. This role involves performing test set-ups, test construction, and conducting tests requiring knowledge of mechanical and structural engineering fundamentals. You will execute test plans, evaluate results, assist in developing test methods and equipment, and provide feedback on data sheets and reports. The role also includes managing engineering projects from scope analysis to client reporting.

Responsibilities

Determine project scope, develop investigation plans, and define project specifications including cost, time, and sample requirements.
Initiate client communication to promote services and follow up on inquiries.
Communicate technical issues, UL procedures, project costs, and timelines to clients.
Address client concerns and resolve issues, providing technical assistance.
Establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files, manufacturer information, and applying UL requirements.
Examine samples for compliance and notify clients of non-compliance or scope changes.
Communicate project status and results to clients.
Resolve engineering issues associated with tests.
Represent UL at industry functions like seminars and trade shows.
Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to achieve client objectives.
Work with senior UL staff to meet and exceed client expectations.
Participate in coordination meetings and prepare test reports.
Receive instruction and collaborate with senior engineers on continuous improvement.
Record observation or calculated data, prepare data sheets, generate reports, and manage client communication.
Maintain project records and documentation.
Set up and operate test equipment, instrumentation, and mechanical/structural set-ups.
Build and adapt test setups and equipment based on project requirements.
Operate designated machines and special laboratory equipment.
Perform routine maintenance of test equipment and laboratory areas.
Conduct lab consumable inventory and upkeep.
Use hand and power tools and perform basic construction.
Safely operate machinery such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and telescopic booms.
Integrate continuous improvement concepts into all aspects of the job.
Adhere to the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and security practices.
Perform other duties as directed.

Requirements

University degree in engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology or diploma from a recognized three-years technology program (mechanical, civil, building engineering or a related discipline) or minimum 3 years direct relevant work experience.
Strong mechanical and structural aptitude/background.
Ability to work in physically demanding environments.
Ability to lift heavy objects, work at heights and work in tight areas.
Ability to work individually or with a team in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to write technical documents.
Ability to effectively communicate with team members and customers.
Professionalism and good manners with team members and clients.
Ability to resolve problems involving several variables in standardized situations with existing guidelines.
Proficient in AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), and/or other software.
Basic knowledge of common laboratory tests and equipment used in the building envelope industry.
Ability to work at heights.

$70,000 to $85,000 CAD
