About the Role
Octopus is establishing a new business line focused on delivering low-cost, reliable, clean energy and faster speed-to-power for data centres and large industrials. This role involves being the electrical owner for innovative power projects, including private wire, behind-the-meter generation and storage, and MV/HV grid connections. The position combines technical responsibilities with project management, overseeing the program, development budget, and external parties from concept to financial close, and continuing through construction, commissioning, and energisation.
Responsibilities
- Own the program and development budget, scheduling from concept to design freeze, including siting, connection application, planning, consents, procurement, and long-lead items, working backward from the customer's energisation date.
- Appoint and manage consultants, ICPs, and study providers.
- Surface risks early and communicate them clearly to stakeholders.
- Own the electrical concept through to sign-off, including single-line diagrams, general arrangements, switchgear and plant layouts, cable routes, and metering and communications architecture.
- Direct and interrogate studies such as load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, earthing, and power quality.
- Chair design reviews and stage gates, and present options with recommendations to the Project Lead and customer.
- Lead the grid interface, managing DNO, TO, and NESO interactions, including applications, offers, technical requirements, securities, milestones, contestable/non-contestable scope, ICP/IDNO coordination, and MPAN registration.
- Manage budget ownership through completion, providing credible CAPEX inputs for the project model across plant, substation, civils, and enabling works, including value engineering and optioneering.
- Oversee FAT/SAT witnessing, commissioning plans and sequences of operation, energisation, and handover.
- Rapidly gain a working understanding of unfamiliar technologies or scopes and deliver them, as this is a first-of-a-kind role with no precedent.
Requirements
- Master’s degree or equivalent in electrical or power systems engineering.
- 5+ years of experience delivering energy or infrastructure projects with a strong foundation in MV and HV systems.
- Demonstrated infrastructure experience, including substations, networks, industrial plants, data centres, utilities, water, or transport, with experience managing ground conditions, easements, consents, tie-ins to live assets, and construction sequencing.
- Previous personal ownership of a program and budget on a development or pre-construction project.
- Experience with a GB/European grid connection from offer to energisation, including compliance with the Grid Code, CUSC, SQSS, G99/G100, ENA engineering recommendations, and BS 7671.
- Ability to coordinate multi-discipline designs where not the expert in every field and to identify weaknesses in other disciplines' input.
- Comfortable acting as the single point of accountability with incomplete information and holding external parties accountable without formal authority.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.
