About the Role
We are seeking an exceptional Senior Leader to lead our Specialty Lines and Commercial business, driving profitable growth and ensuring we remain at the forefront of commercial insurance through strategic direction and hands-on technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute underwriting strategy aligned with Specialty Lines strategic plans for profitable business growth.
- Maintain technical ownership of products, refreshing them to ensure competitiveness and strategic alignment.
- Provide expert underwriting guidance for writing and retaining business within strategy parameters.
- Establish and maintain underwriting philosophies, rules, and guidelines across key products and lines of business.
- Support the branch network to achieve individual branch plans and commercial objectives.
- Oversee monthly account performance and take action to steer the portfolio towards plan delivery.
- Ensure regulatory compliance, support audit/governance requirements, and develop team expertise.
- Lead cross-group interactions and manage key external relationships.
Requirements
- Must be eligible and authorized to work in the United Kingdom.
- ACII or FCII qualification is preferred.
- Demonstrable expertise in general insurance underwriting and technical approach.
- Subject to background screening every 4 years with an annual declaration in interim years due to IDD regime.
- Subject to an enhanced level of background screening requirements as a Certified Function role under SM&CR.

- Technical Mastery: Thorough knowledge of underwriting processes, product lines, managing complex cases, portfolios, and schemes; clear communication of technical concepts.
- Commercial & Regulatory Acumen: Strong commercial awareness of customer, broker, and partner needs; knowledge of general insurance law, FCA regulations, and KPIs.
- Data-Driven Decision Maker: Analyzes statistical data, monitors performance, identifies actions, balances strategic thinking with evidence-based decisions.
- Product & Process Developer: Track record of devising new products, underwriting guidelines, leading complex projects; international underwriting experience is ideal.
- Inclusive Leader: Manages differing viewpoints and negotiations, prioritizes demands, manages multiple initiatives, creates inclusive environments.
