About the Role

The Activities Organizer role involves developing, organizing, implementing, and facilitating educational, recreational, and social activities for residents of all ages in a shelter and support services setting. This role is crucial for creating a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment, ensuring activities are age-appropriate and culturally sensitive, and supporting resident engagement in accordance with Toronto Shelter Standards and Housing First principles.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, organize, implement, and facilitate educational, recreational, and social activities for residents of all ages.
  • Incorporate facility-based programming alongside occasional water games and swim days.
  • Create and maintain a warm, welcoming, and inclusive environment for residents and families.
  • Ensure all activities are age-appropriate, culturally inclusive, and responsive to diverse resident needs.
  • Arrange, promote, and supervise events on-site and off-site, coordinating transportation, equipment, promotion, bookings, and nutrition.
  • Complete monthly calendars, program plans, evaluations, participation records, and incident reports.
  • Assist in facilitating resident and children’s meetings to support participation in service delivery and program feedback.
  • Prepare agendas, take minutes, and follow up on action items from meetings.
  • Attend group outings with residents in collaboration with client programming staff.
  • Monitor programs and activities, ensuring established standards, safety protocols, and water safety rules are upheld.
  • Provide feedback on programs and submit recommendations for changes.
  • Work with Management to transition new hires and volunteers.
  • Recommend the purchase of recreational supplies and equipment, maintaining storage and inventory.
  • Report repairs and replacement needs of equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain a welcoming environment in all program areas.
  • Respond to parental or caregiver inquiries and promote parental involvement.
  • Undertake special projects and assignments as required.
  • Partner and liaise with community agencies to develop and implement enhanced literacy and life-skills programming.
  • Ensure all materials and equipment are gathered, organized, and ready for each activity.
  • Support resident engagement and inclusion in accordance with Toronto Shelter Standards and Housing First principles.
  • Promote positive parent-child engagement and model supportive interactions.

Requirements

  • Experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreational and social programs within a social service setting, with a proven ability to serve clients of all ages (0 to 99) and a specific focus on adults, youth, and school-aged children.
  • Experience supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
  • Experience assisting individuals with diverse psychosocial, physical, educational, emotional, and environmental needs within a shelter or similar residential setting.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Operations, Case Management, Senior Management Teams, and community agencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with residents, families, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Fundamental knowledge of domestic violence, substance use, mental health, and the Child, Youth, and Family Services Act (CYFSA).
  • Knowledge of behaviour management techniques for adults, children, and youth.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the demonstrated ability to manage and resolve complex situations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (days, afternoons, evenings, and weekends).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  • Experience with conflict de-escalation and crisis response in a residential or community environment.
  • A Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check will be required as a condition of employment.
