About the Role
Supervise children in an afterschool program, focusing on their health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, safety, routine duties, character, and skill development. Counselors work under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Youth Programming.
Responsibilities
- Attend all assigned training meetings and staff trainings.
- Arrive on time and be prepared to begin assigned responsibilities.
- Observe and learn afterschool program procedures through working with experienced counselors and program staff.
- Act as a positive role model for children.
- Appropriately interact with children and actively participate in activities to enhance their afterschool experience.
- Assist in maintaining a safe environment for children and follow all supervision and safety procedures.
- Set a good example for staff and children in all areas, including cleanliness, clean-up, rules, cooperation, and sportsmanship.
- Clean assigned areas and assist with maintaining organized and welcoming program spaces.
- Participate in all program-wide special events, activities, and events as assigned.
- Demonstrate a cooperative and professional attitude and flexibility in response to program needs and responsibilities.
- Provide support to lead staff and other counselors whenever necessary or possible.
- Be attentive to the social and emotional adjustment of each child.
- Promote and encourage child participation in all appropriate activities.
- Exhibit personal habits, health, dress, speech, and relationships with other staff that serve as a positive role model for children.
Requirements
- Must participate in and successfully complete counselor orientation and/or training prior to working with children.
- Must exhibit emotional maturity, good moral character, and integrity.
- Experience working with school-age children in an afterschool or group setting is preferred.
- Ability to work as a team member with other counselors and staff members.
- Responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, patient, and willing to learn.
- Ability to actively engage children in age-appropriate activities and support their social, emotional, and academic development.
