About the Role

Campfire is seeking Directors of Engineering to lead the scale-up of its engineering organization from approximately 30 to 75 people. Each Director will own a segment of the organization, comprising 25-40 engineers across 3-5 teams, and report to the CTO. This is a manager-of-managers role focused on hiring and developing engineering managers, shaping team structures, and overseeing planning, shipping, and operations within their area.

Responsibilities

  • Own the org design for your area, including team boundaries, charters, and staffing plans.
  • Lead, coach, and hold accountable 3-5 engineering managers, developing first-time managers and growing future leaders from the IC ranks.
  • Drive hiring for your teams, encompassing headcount planning, recruiting, interviewer training, and closing senior candidates.
  • Run planning and delivery for your area, ensuring roadmap alignment with product, quarterly commitments, and predictable execution across teams.
  • Uphold operational rigor expected of a financial-systems company, including on-call, incident response, SLOs, and release practices that meet enterprise and audit scrutiny.
  • Partner with peer Directors, security, and compliance on cross-cutting concerns such as shared platform, SOC 2, enterprise security reviews, and AI governance.
  • Set and uphold engineering standards across a Python/Django, PostgreSQL, Next.js, and AWS stack, covering code review, testing, observability, and architecture decisions.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in software engineering, with at least 5 years managing engineers and 2 years managing managers.
  • Experience leading a group of 20+ engineers with multiple managers reporting to you through a period of rapid growth.
  • Experience building or operating systems where correctness and auditability are non-negotiable (e.g., fintech, accounting, payments, ERP).
  • Technical credibility with senior ICs, capable of reviewing architecture and contributing to data model and infrastructure decisions.
  • Comfortable operating as a peer leader, demonstrating collaboration, low ego, and effectiveness in working across organizational boundaries.
  • Hands-on interest in running LLMs and agents in production.
  • Clear, direct communicator with strong writing skills and the ability to provide constructive feedback.
  • Experience taking a product through enterprise security and compliance (SOC 2, SSO/SAML, vendor reviews).
  • Familiarity with revenue recognition, GAAP close, or accounting integrations (e.g., Stripe, Deel, Rippling, banks, payroll).
  • Experience with MCP or building integrations for AI platforms.
  • Depth in Python and relational databases.
