About the Role
Lead the team that turns craft into shared, reusable building blocks, including libraries, tokens, and components, serving as a bridge to code. This role defines strategy, grows the team, and drives adoption and education for the design system, ensuring it is understood and utilized across the organization. You will collaborate with product management, engineering, and research to provide design direction, elevate quality, and connect the team's work to business decisions.
Responsibilities
- Define and drive the direction for the design system across design and creative technology, tying initiatives to business or product decisions.
- Articulate the audience, behavior shift, user value, assertion, metric, and decision informed by each initiative.
- Set and protect a clear standard of quality (usefulness, usability, modernity) for the team's work.
- Act as a player-coach, delegating work and growing designers and technologists through coaching and clear ownership.
- Own the design-to-code bridge, ensuring smooth transitions of tokens, components, and specs from design to engineering, and adhering to schedules and quality standards.
- Drive adoption and education across surfaces, making the system's value visible to leadership through clear narratives and regular communication.
- Partner with product management, engineering, and research on strategy, priorities, and staffing, influencing stakeholders through high-stakes decisions.
Requirements
- 8+ years in design, including experience leading and growing teams, ideally in design systems, platform design, or a related field.
- Proficiency at the intersection of design and code, comfortable in Figma and code editors, able to translate designs into production-quality UI or reverse-engineer code to inform design.
- Strong front-end skills (TypeScript, React, CSS, animation) with judgment for feasibility, scalability, and performance.
- A deep eye for craft and detail, understanding how to achieve pixel-perfect quality across implementation and interactions.
- Systems thinking approach to build reusable, maintainable component libraries with tokens, variables, and accessibility.
- Ability to move fast and prototype ideas quickly to validate concepts.
- Excitement about AI and defining new interaction paradigms.
- Strong strategy and product sense, connecting design craft to measurable business and customer impact.
- Collaborative, people-first leadership style, coaching designers and engineers, influencing senior partners, and creating shared ownership.
- Experience with developer tools or technical products is a plus.
- Experience with native or cross-platform UI (e.g., Electron) is a plus.
- Understanding of code editors and IDEs is a plus.
