Responsibilities

  • Serve as Clothing Designer (Patterns) and technical consultant.
  • Create custom patterns for Service members.
  • Evaluate, maintain, draft, and develop master patterns, including those for life support clothing, equipage items, and uniform apparel.
  • Maintain inventory of CAD and paper patterns from DoD/other Federal agencies.
  • Collaborate with Service CAD offices to ensure CAD products are complete and suitable for production use by DLA vendors.
  • Develop and draft special measurement patterns using a computer-aided design (CAD) system and manual modification of existing hard paper patterns.
  • Evaluate computerized patterns from all Services and contractors for compliance with requirements.
  • Recommend major modifications to patterns for a wide variety of garments for all services.
  • Review and organize technical information and analyze problem areas, proposing technical solutions.
  • Develop item files and data packages for technical history on each item.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on assigned projects, review technical data, conduct preliminary negotiations, and make recommendations.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level (for GS-11), GS-07 level (for GS-09), or GS-05 level (for GS-07).
  • For GS-11: Comprehensive knowledge of uniform and clothing design principles, flat patterns, drawings, grading/sizing, commercial practices, material characteristics, finishes, fabrication, and manufacturing techniques.
  • For GS-11: Experience with tailoring, pattern making, size grading, and translating designs into flat patterns using traditional and modern methods.
  • For GS-11: Knowledge of multiple CAD software systems and equipment for pattern storage, operation, and maintenance.
  • For GS-11: Experienced judgment in modifying, adapting, or compromising with standard guidelines and developing solutions for complex features.
  • For GS-09: Knowledge of uniform and clothing design principles, flat patterns, drawings, grading/sizing, commercial practices, material characteristics, finishes, fabrication, and manufacturing techniques.
  • For GS-09: Experience with pattern making or grading.
  • For GS-07: Experience in the design and development of highly tailored outer garments or specialized occupational clothing.
  • For GS-07: Experience with demonstrated knowledge of layout and fabrication methods.
  • Education Substitution (GS-11): Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M., if related. Major study in textile technology, tailoring, clothing design, clothing production, anthropometry, anatomy, or physiology.
  • Education Substitution (GS-09): Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education, or LL.B. or J.D. Major study in textile technology, tailoring, clothing design, clothing production, anthropometry, anatomy, or physiology.
  • Education Substitution (GS-07): One full year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement. Major study in textile technology, tailoring, clothing design, clothing production, anthropometry, anatomy, or physiology.
  • Combinations of education and experience may be used to meet qualification requirements.
  • Skilled as a Clothing Designer (Patterns) and technical consultant.
  • Evaluating, maintaining, drafting, and developing master patterns for prototype and standard garments.
  • Determining complete pattern requirements, including sizing patterns based on component thickness, number of layers, and construction type.
  • Hands-on experience maintaining inventory of Computer Aided Draft (CAD) and paper patterns.
  • Expertise in knowledge of uniform and clothing design principles, patterns, drawings, grading/sizing, commercial practices, material characteristics, finishes, and skilled in fabrication and manufacturing techniques.
  • Applying techniques of tailoring, pattern making, and size grading.
  • Ability to translate designs into patterns using traditional and modern methods.
