About the Role
The Group Exercise Instructor (GXI) will lead members through pre-arranged exercises to enhance fitness, strength, and endurance, while prioritizing safety. The GXI will also educate members on fitness and report to the Regional Fitness Programming Manager.
Responsibilities
- Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to class to interact with members, answer questions, and assess fitness progress.
- Know participants individually and understand their fitness capabilities.
- Wear appropriate fitness attire adhering to COVID-19/CDC guidelines, ensuring proper form visibility without being revealing.
- Wear proper footwear at all times.
- Prepare appropriate music without offensive language.
- Ensure all equipment is functioning correctly and microphones are ready.
- Participate in events to promote class formats.
- Introduce self and class format.
- Inquire about first-time attendees and assess their fitness level privately.
- Ensure clear verbal instructions, appropriate music volume, tempo, and atmosphere.
- Continually monitor participants for correct form and offer variations for all fitness levels.
- Create a motivational and fun environment.
- Uphold Fitness Connection’s Mission and Values by delivering classes that meet or exceed company standards based on COVID-19/CDC guidelines.
- Engage in opportunities to positively interact with members.
- Remove music and return microphone after class.
- Ensure the room is in order for the next class.
- Answer participant questions and concerns.
- Solicit feedback from participants.
- Ensure classes begin and end promptly.
- Make adjustments to class flow to adhere to the schedule.
- Follow proper closing procedures if teaching the last class of the day.
- Find a qualified/approved substitute if unable to fulfill a scheduled class and notify the GXD if there is a problem.
- Be dependable and consistent in class schedules.
- Attend all required staff meetings.
- Follow proper time recording procedures.
- Prepare incident and/or witness reports as necessary.
- Maintain a positive and professional attitude.
- Promote COVID-19/CDC adherence, Fitness Connection, and the Fitness Connection Group Exercise program.
Requirements
- Knowledge of safe exercise techniques and group exercise principles.
- Knowledge of basic physiology and body mechanics.
- Ability to perform a variety of exercise routines.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot audio equipment.
- Instructors must provide verifiable proof of education/certification for specialized skill formats (e.g., Yoga, Pilates, Senior Fitness Specific - Silver Sneakers, ASHLink, Silver & Fit, etc.).
- Must have company-approved current national GXI certification.
- Must have/obtain CPR AED certification and basic first-aid training.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business-related documents.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers or members.
- Ability to effectively present information to members.
