About the Role
This role provides direct assistance to the classroom teacher in all aspects of the daily classroom routine, including implementing lesson plans and supervising student groups. The Teaching Assistant will work with and supervise classroom aides and react quickly to emergency situations. Assignments may be expanded based on training and ability, and may include participation in parent conferences.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct assistance to the classroom teacher in all areas of the daily classroom routine.
- Supervise a classroom group by implementing the teachers' lesson plan and schedule in the absence of the teacher.
- Conduct small groups during scheduled activities and work with individual children on specific goals, with teacher assistance.
- Work with and supervise classroom aides in toileting procedures, playground programs, lunch programs, and student arrival and departure.
- React quickly and appropriately to emergency situations.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the teacher, based on training and ability.
- Participate in parent conferences when appropriate.
Requirements
- Must hold at least a high school diploma.
- Must have or be eligible for a New York State Level One (1) Teaching Assistant Certificate.
- Must pursue Teaching Assistant Certification as soon as possible if not already held.
- Must maintain Level Three (3) Teaching Assistant Certification with Professional Development every five (5) years through the New York State Education Department.
- Prior experience with developmentally disabled children in an educational or recreational setting is preferred but not required.
