About the Role

Trustly is seeking a portfolio risk leader to manage the balance between risk and revenue across business domains, transforming risk management into a growth driver. This role partners with commercial and customer service teams, and oversees segment risk management, customer-facing risk solutions consulting, and risk operations and compliance. You will collaborate with Risk Data Science, Risk Product, and Risk Engineering, and serve as the senior risk voice for the executive team and key clients.

Responsibilities

  • Own consumer transaction loss, merchant credit exposure, and approval rates across customer segments.
  • Balance approval rates against loss, informed by loss attribution.
  • Manage change control for decision sets, including rules, thresholds, score cutoffs, and non-standard deal terms, quantifying their impact before launch.
  • Define eligibility and economics for guarantee tiers.
  • Monitor return performance against network rules and internal limits for various return reasons.
  • Own rules and thresholds across segments, including per-merchant risk settings.
  • Set and document merchant underwriting criteria, including onboarding, KYB standards, risk tiering, monitoring triggers, and offboarding.
  • Establish the merchant approval authority framework in partnership with Finance and Commercial.
  • Direct incident response for major risk events, escalating to Legal, Commercial, and banking partners.
  • Set risk appetite and pre-authorization requirements early in deal negotiations.
  • Present risk positions and trade-offs on complex deals, including approval rate and expected loss.
  • Own risk inputs into pricing, including expected loss by customer, guarantee tier recommendations, and terms for non-standard deals.
  • Partner with Customer Success to integrate risk perspectives into customer meetings and reviews.
  • Provide regular risk reporting and propose remediation for performance drifts.
  • Act as the executive-level contact for customer risk relationships.
  • Build and develop the team across segment risk management, customer-facing risk solutions consulting, and risk operations and compliance.
  • Manage end-to-end risk execution, including underwriting operations, decision queues, representment, recovery, collections, and first-line compliance.
  • Set the agenda for the Risk Committee and present performance, emerging risks, and proposed changes to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Risk Data Science on rule implementation and with Risk Product and Engineering on engine requirements.

Requirements

  • 12+ years in payments, lending, or banking risk, with at least 5 years leading teams across multiple functions.
  • Proven ownership of a loss budget and approval rate target, with a track record of improving approval rates while maintaining loss targets.
  • Direct experience setting rules and thresholds in a real-time, score-driven decisioning environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of merchant underwriting, including KYB, beneficial ownership, financial statement review, exposure modeling, and industry risk.
  • Experience overseeing large-scale risk operations, including service level agreements for decision queues and first-line controls.
  • Experience presenting and defending risk positions to customer executives and internal executive teams, including risk terms within commercial deals.
  • Experience establishing or rebuilding a risk function, including team hiring.
