About the Role

Provide specialized services and support to a departmental office or program, acting as a reader and/or scribe, facilitating computer and technology access, and assisting students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a reader and/or scribe, including note-taking before, after, or in class, lab, or testing environments.
  • Attends class/lab with the student.
  • Facilitates computer and technology access as appropriate.
  • May assist with access to technology as appropriate.
  • May describe graphics or pictures in the classroom, lab, or testing environment.
  • May assist student with object manipulation during laboratory classes as needed.
  • Maintains boundaries with student as set by supervisor.
  • Appropriately communicates with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Acts in a professional manner and is dependable.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Listens to, understands, and follows directions.
  • Works closely with students with disabilities.
  • Maintains an established work schedule.
  • Maintains confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Reports violations under Title IX and, under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act), select individuals are required to report crimes.
  • Reports crimes as a Campus Security Authority if identified as such.

Requirements

  • Must maintain a domicile in the State of Texas while working for the college and throughout the duration of employment.
  • May require completion of assigned college-level classes as determined by the academic department.
  • Work safely and follow safety rules.
  • Report unsafe working conditions and behavior.
  • Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Skills

  • Proficiency with accessible software and devices.
  • Knowledge of processes and procedures related to the departmental work being done.
  • Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills including tact and diplomacy.
  • Effectively using organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using standard office software applications and student information and database systems.
