About the Role
The Principal Solution Architect designs and guides the implementation of complex, enterprise-wide technology solutions, transforming strategic vision into actionable roadmaps and building strong coalitions across the institution. This role provides architectural leadership across clinical, research, administrative, and enterprise technology environments, playing a critical role in evaluating emerging technologies, integrating systems, and supporting major transformation initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Leads Enterprise Solution Design
- Translate institutional vision into tangible architectural roadmaps and actionable designs.
- Develop solution and integration architecture for EHR, ERP, digital, and IT transformation initiatives.
- Design secure, scalable, and interoperable systems across clinical, research, and administrative domains.
- Establish architecture principles and an escalation model for resolving project-level disagreements.
- Deliver solution architectures to support human health research and hospital build initiatives.
- Drives Technology Strategy and Roadmapping
- Develop and maintain the architecture and technology roadmap aligned with platform milestones.
- Map and triage current technology solutions across UT Medical Center, main campus, and research teams.
- Create a phased roadmap for decommissioning legacy or redundant technologies.
- Evaluate new technology requests for platform strategy fit and vendor viability.
- Produce executive-level presentation materials to communicate roadmap and platform strategy.
- Collaborates with Stakeholders and Builds Coalitions
- Engage with clinical, operational, research, and administrative leaders to gather and translate requirements.
- Build institutional coalitions to drive adoption of architectural standards and strategic initiatives.
- Facilitate design workshops and solution reviews across departments.
- Communicate architectural decisions and roadmaps to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Lead change across short- and long-term objectives in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
- Establishes Architecture Governance and Standards
- Define and enforce architectural principles, standards, and templates.
- Maintain a current and complete technology solution catalog.
- Lead architecture governance reviews and ensure compliance with enterprise standards.
- Mentor junior architects and technical staff on best practices and frameworks.
- Supports Project Execution and Integration
- Provide architectural oversight for major IT initiatives and transformation programs.
- Ensure alignment of project execution with enterprise architecture and platform strategy.
- Coordinate integration of cloud, on-premise, and hybrid systems.
- Validate system performance, scalability, and security in collaboration with cybersecurity and infrastructure teams.
- Conduct post-implementation reviews to assess solution effectiveness and alignment with architectural goals.
- Participate in disaster recovery and business continuity planning exercises.
- Represent the organization at industry conferences, vendor briefings, and technical forums.
- Support merger and acquisition due diligence and integration planning for acquired systems and platforms.
- Contribute to IT capital planning and long-term investment strategies.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of eight years of experience developing and overseeing solution architecture, enterprise systems design, or IT strategy.
- Experience in vendor relationship management.
- Experience leading IT transformational initiatives in complex environments.
- Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
- Master’s degree in Information Technology, Health Informatics, or a related field.
- Minimum of ten years of experience in enterprise architecture or solution design.
- Experience in hospital, medical education, research, or related healthcare environments.
- New facility technology-related technical design and implementation experience.
- Experience with EHR systems such as Epic, ERP platforms, cloud infrastructure such as Microsoft Azure, and healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7 and FHIR.
- TOGAF Certification.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert.
- SAFe® Architect Certification.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent certification.

- $189,279+

- Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
