About the Role
The Enphase Energy SST Product Innovation Team, part of the Office of the CTO, is responsible for defining, prototyping, and scaling next-generation Enphase power systems. This role requires a Compliance Lead to navigate the complex and evolving standards landscape for novel medium-voltage solid-state transformers (SSTs), ensuring compliance from early architecture through certification and market launch.
Responsibilities
- Own the SST compliance strategy end-to-end, defining the roadmap from concept through certification and market launch.
- Identify all applicable safety, performance, and grid interconnection standards and map the certification pathway and timeline for each product variant and target market.
- Understand the technical rationale, test intent, and engineering origin of each standard clause to guide design decisions and defend Enphase's technical position.
- Navigate ambiguity in evolving standards at the intersection of power electronics, medium-voltage equipment, transformers, switchgear, and grid interconnection.
- Lead certification testing with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) and agencies, including planning, coordination, and issue resolution.
- Integrate compliance requirements into product architecture from the initial design phase.
- Create and maintain a comprehensive compliance knowledge base documenting standards, interpretations, agency decisions, and test results.
- Drive pre-compliance and internal validation testing to identify and close gaps before formal agency submission.
- Represent Enphase on standards development committees and industry working groups (OCP, IEEE, UL) to influence industry evolution and gain early visibility into standards changes.
Requirements
- BS, MS, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Job title and level determined by candidate experience: Principal Engineer requires BS + 15 yrs, MS + 12 yrs, or PhD + 8 yrs.
- Demonstrated ability to understand the technical 'why' behind standards, including their engineering origin and the failure modes they prevent.
- Proven ability to deal with ambiguity and develop defensible compliance strategies for new product categories where standards may be incomplete or contradictory.
- Hands-on experience planning and executing certification test campaigns with nationally recognized testing laboratories (NRTLs).
- Deep knowledge of applicable standards for MV power electronics, including UL 1741, IEEE 1547, UL 347A, IEC 62477-2, IEC 62109, UL 1562, IEC 60076, IEEE C37 series, IEC 62271, IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E, NFPA 70, NFPA 855, IEC 60664, UL 840, IEC 61000 series, and UL 1998.
- Experience with insulation coordination and dielectric testing for MV equipment (1–35 kV).
- Ability to manage multi-track certification programs with parallel timelines and cross-functional dependencies.
- Solution-oriented thinking focused on identifying and implementing practical compliance paths.
- Prior working experience at or with an NRTL (UL, Intertek, TUV) is desired.
- Active participation in standards committees (OCP, IEEE, UL, IEC, NEMA) is desired.
- Experience with grid code compliance and utility interconnection agreements for DER or MV equipment is desired.
- Familiarity with functional safety standards (IEC 61508, IEC 62061) is desired.
- Knowledge of international certification pathways (CE marking, UKCA) is desired.
- Familiarity with arc-flash hazard analysis (IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E) is desired.
- Background in data center power infrastructure standards and compliance is desired.
