About the Role
The Forward Deployed AI Engineer plays a critical role in how Banyan applies AI across internal business functions, including Operations, Finance, Human Resources, and Legal. This role involves understanding team workflows, reimagining them, and building high-value AI tools to enhance efficiency and intelligence. The engineer will act as a builder and translator, bridging business needs and technical AI capabilities to solve problems and drive operational improvements.
Responsibilities
- Embed and own the process by learning systems, KPIs, and pain points.
- Identify high-value AI opportunities across functions and sequence work by impact, effort, and risk.
- Turn ambiguous business problems into working solutions through rapid prototyping and building scalable solutions.
- Prototype and ship AI-native applications using LLMs, retrieval, and agentic workflows, leveraging AI-assisted development tools.
- Evaluate and make build-versus-buy decisions for solutions, with an expectation for internal builds.
- Define success metrics, translate business problems into technical requirements, and communicate technical decisions back to business teams.
- Drive adoption by training teams, measuring impact, and sharing best practices within the Technology & Data Strategy team.
Requirements
- 6 to 10 years of experience in software engineering, analytics, strategy, finance, or product.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in AI or building AI-enabled applications.
- Demonstrated experience shipping production AI tools, including LLM applications, retrieval systems, or agentic workflows, from prototype to real users.
- Hands-on experience building with automation/orchestration platforms (e.g., n8n) and designing/shipping bespoke applications on AWS.
- Solid engineering practices including code in GitHub with reviewed pull requests, proper secrets handling, and infrastructure as code.
- Working knowledge of CI/CD, environment separation, staged rollout, monitoring, and rollback.
- Strong SQL and solid data modeling instincts.
- Command of Excel.
- Working knowledge of modern BI tools such as Looker, Power BI, or Tableau.
- Demonstrated ability to work with messy, real-world data.
- Working command of modern AI technologies, including LLMs, retrieval, agentic workflows, model evaluation, data quality, and AI limitations.
- Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code in daily workflow.
- Strong financial and commercial acumen, with the ability to build and communicate business cases to non-technical stakeholders.
- Forward-deployed or production AI experience is a plus (e.g., Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Engineer, hands-on consulting, or shipping LLM applications in business environments).
