About the Role

This position serves as a Teacher’s Aide/Substitute for Grand Street Settlement Early Childhood classrooms. The role involves assisting with child supervision, implementing classroom activities, supporting staff, and maintaining the classroom environment to ensure children's health and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all children's indoor and outdoor activities while incorporating positive guidance techniques.
  • Assist with implementing a child-centered curriculum and learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement, and self-motivation.
  • Collaborate with the classroom team in preparing daily lesson plans and individualizing for children.
  • Assist with collecting daily anecdotes and writing observations for children.
  • Assist with assessing children using Teaching Strategies Gold online three times a year.
  • Provide positive guidance and discipline supporting children as they acquire readiness skills for kindergarten.
  • Assist with creating and maintaining a positive working relationship with parents, providing positive feedback on a child's developmental success and challenges.
  • Encourage parent participation in staff-parent conferences and home visits.
  • Assist with maintaining regular contact with parents and completing appropriate documentation.
  • Direct developmental concerns to the Lead Teacher and participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
  • Assist the Teacher in completing attendance, health checks, home correspondence, home visit forms, accident/incident reports, referrals, and safety inspections.
  • Assist with requesting supplies as needed and participate in classroom/program inventory.
  • Work with the teaching team to analyze child outcomes on a classroom basis two to three times a year.
  • Participate in coaching opportunities and professional development training.
  • Substitute for Assistant Teachers and other staff members as needed.
  • Lift 35 pounds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalence required; some college credits preferred.
  • At least one year of experience working with children ages 0-5 and families.
  • Ability to work with children and families with special developmental, social, or cultural needs.
  • Ability to maintain written records and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to interpret documents such as safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with participating families.
  • Basic computer literacy in email and Microsoft Office.
  • Clearance through DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry, and Sex Offender Registry.
  • Completion of 3 reference checks.
  • Pass a physical examination with updated TB test, varicella, tdap, and MMR.
  • Obtain Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years) and comply with agency policy.
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR and Preventive Infectious Diseases certificate within the first year of employment.
  • Meet all employee health requirements in Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start Performance Standards.
