About the Role
The incumbent is responsible for providing support services to clients living in their own homes or in assisted living settings. Job responsibilities are both generic to the PSW role and specific to the program area/site. Work may be scheduled on an hourly or block of hours/shift basis.
Responsibilities
- Provide support services to clients as authorized by the Supervisor.
- Deliver services in a professional and culturally sensitive manner.
- Comply with all agency, unit, and program policies and procedures.
- Provide service relevant to the program and authorized by the Supervisor, within the scope of practice.
- Comply with all health and safety policies and procedures.
- Provide service based on physical demands including frequent light to moderate lifting (10-25 kgs), walking, bending, stretching, pulling, and operating equipment.
- Report any work-related injury to the Supervisor/On-call within 3 hours.
- Participate in an “early and safe return to work” program if required.
- Confirm work schedule and report to the office if unable to work.
- Obtain community schedules by Friday prior to the week of service.
- Respond to all office voice mail messages.
- Use the Alayacare Mobile Application to clock in and out of visits/shifts.
- Present a professional image and conduct oneself professionally in all work-related duties.
- Use good communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff, co-workers, other service providers, and clients.
- Promote a positive workplace environment and team building.
- Resolve or seek assistance with conflicts.
- Follow all cluster routines and client service plans.
- Understand that the PSW may not report off duty until staff report to work and follow instructions in case of no-shows or lateness.
- Prepare meals as per the menu cycle and consult with clients for modifications.
- Order, check, and store groceries as needed.
- Provide a verbal report at change of shift or break time with co-worker.
- Operate, troubleshoot, and contact the Oncall 24-hour response team for emergencies.
- Document accurately in client and program records in a timely and professional manner.
- Ensure sufficient groceries, housecleaning/program supplies, and forms are available.
- Respond to building service/maintenance issues promptly.
- Support opportunities/activities for clients to maximize and maintain their physical and mental abilities.
- Assist clients in meeting their Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (iADLs).
- Effectively assist clients in various situations using behavioral management techniques.
- Maintain a sanitary program environment.
- Transfer between different program locations as required.
- Maintain professionalism and respect in all interactions.
- Follow directions and exercise sound judgment in decision-making.
- Work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Maintain confidentiality and client privacy.
Requirements
- Personal Support Worker Certificate and NACC Certificate (if applicable).
- Minimum one (1) year experience providing personal care to seniors and people living with disabilities.
- Physical capability to perform frequent light to moderate lifting, walking, bending, stretching, and pulling.
- Adaptable to transfer between different program locations as required.
