About the Role
This is a hands-on accounting leadership role for an experienced Controller in a growing construction-related organization. The position focuses on strengthening financial reporting through robust processes, accurate data, and clear ownership, requiring a blend of construction accounting expertise and general ledger, cost accounting, inventory, and financial reporting knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Maintain general ledger integrity, including journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and adjusting entries.
- Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules.
- Research and resolve accounting discrepancies, ensuring issues are followed through to resolution.
- Support annual audits, tax reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and other financial initiatives.
- Oversee construction accounting activities, including job costing, labor and project allocations, and related financial reporting.
- Develop and review inventory analysis reports and investigate cost and inventory variances.
- Monitor inventory transactions, verify accurate costs, and reconcile inventory accounts to the general ledger.
- Partner with operations and project teams to improve the accuracy and flow of job, cost, and inventory information.
- Identify process gaps affecting financial accuracy and implement practical controls and procedures.
- Provide oversight and support for accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, billing, and related accounting functions.
- Establish and maintain systems, controls, and documented processes supporting financial data integrity.
- Clarify ownership and accountability within accounting workflows and strengthen interdepartmental communication.
- Review existing processes and recommend improvements for accuracy, consistency, and efficiency.
- Participate in special projects and prepare financial analyses or reports as requested by leadership.
- Support and develop accounting team members, establishing clear expectations and accountability.
- Collaborate with accounting, operations, project management, Human Resources, and leadership teams.
- Communicate financial and process issues clearly to both accounting and non-accounting stakeholders.
- Promote a team-oriented environment focused on problem-solving, follow-through, and continuous improvement.
- Provide direct supervision and day-to-day leadership to accounting team members.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on construction accounting experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Experience with construction job costing, cost accounting, and inventory accounting.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and comfort working with detailed financial data.
- Excellent organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Process-driven approach with strong follow-through, attention to detail, and accountability.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and contribute as a hands-on team player.
- CPA certification preferred.
- Acumatica experience, particularly General Ledger functionality, is a plus.
- Experience improving accounting controls, workflows, and documented procedures.
- Experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff.
