About the Role
Payments are central to Monzo's operations, facilitating millions of daily transactions. This role involves partnering within the Payments Collective to manage risks and controls across a complex ecosystem of products, technology, operations, and regulatory obligations. The goal is to make risk management practical, proportionate, and integrated into daily operations.
Responsibilities
- Act as a trusted first-line risk partner for Payments, understanding its products, services, technology, infrastructure, operations, and regulatory landscape to provide risk advice.
- Partner on significant change and strategic programs, assessing risk across Product, Engineering, and Operations, and guiding teams through governance.
- Strengthen the Payments risk and control environment by identifying gaps and ensuring effective management of material risks.
- Support Payments' regulatory, policy, and scheme obligations by translating requirements into actionable steps and assisting with regulatory reporting.
- Assist with significant incidents and remediation, assessing impacts, coordinating remediation, and incorporating lessons learned.
- Support Payments' resilience and continuity, including Operational Resilience and Business Continuity planning.
- Help Payments deliver good customer outcomes by supporting Consumer Duty monitoring and product reviews.
- Support governance, audit, and assurance activities by providing risk insights and coordinating assurance efforts.
- Improve risk management processes within Payments by simplifying, automating, and embedding proportionate risk management practices.
Requirements
- Strong understanding of control environments in multi-market, global Payments organizations.
- Experience and judgment to identify control gaps and shape evolving environments.
- Understanding that Payments risk extends beyond customer-facing products, connecting product, operational, technology, regulatory, scheme, and resilience risks.
- Experience independently leading complex risk assessments and providing effective challenge to teams.
- Strong knowledge of risk and control frameworks (risk assessment, control design/monitoring, issue/action management, incidents, governance).
- Ability to interpret regulatory and policy requirements and translate them into practical actions.
- Experience supporting complex incidents, remediation, regulatory activity, audit, or assurance.
- Comfort working with data and metrics to understand risk and control environment health.
- Ability to balance strategic programs with ongoing risk management, prioritizing effectively.
- Capacity to independently navigate ambiguous and high-complexity problems, knowing when to escalate.
- Clear communication skills, producing high-quality, decision-ready material for senior leadership, committees, auditors, and regulators.
- Ability to build strong relationships across various departments while maintaining constructive challenge.
- Pragmatic and proportionate approach, focusing on key risks and finding practical solutions.
