About the Role

The Agentic AI Lead is a senior hands-on engineer responsible for designing, building, evaluating, and operating GenAI and agentic AI systems for AstraZeneca Japan's commercial, medical, and field organizations. This role focuses on hands-on coding and improving the team's engineering practices, taking ownership of existing AI platform assets and ensuring their reliability, cost-effectiveness, and security. The Lead will work autonomously, provide technical direction and coaching, and collaborate with business owners to ensure solutions address validated business problems.

Responsibilities

Designs, builds, evaluates, and operates GenAI and agentic AI systems.
Raises the engineering practice of the team building AI systems.
Takes ownership of existing AI platform assets and key systems.
Ensures reliability, cost, and security of AI systems.
Provides technical direction and coaching to AI engineers.
Partners with business owners to ensure solutions address validated business problems.

Requirements

5+ years building and running software in production (Python; AWS or equivalent cloud).
2+ years hands-on shipping LLM-based or agentic applications to real users.
Demonstrated evaluation-driven practice with evaluation sets, error analysis, and iteration.
Daily use of agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) as a core part of engineering work.
Experience leading a technical workstream or mentoring engineers.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent experience.
Business level Japanese language proficiency (JLPT N2 or higher, N1 preferred for non-native speakers).
Business level English proficiency.

Skills

Agent architecture (workflow vs. agent harness, tool calling, MCP, memory and context management, guardrails).
Agent frameworks (e.g., Bedrock AgentCore, LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK).
Grounding (RAG with vector stores, retrieval over structured data via SQL).
LLM foundations (model selection, tokenisation, cost, context window, caching, fine-tuning, self-hosting).
Production operations for AI systems (observability, tracing, cost/latency optimisation, regression testing, prompt/model versioning, infrastructure-as-code).
Software engineering fundamentals (full-stack application design, data modelling, testing strategy, secure-by-design).
AWS in production (Lambda, ECS/Fargate, API Gateway, Bedrock, IAM).
Clear written and verbal communication of technical trade-offs to non-specialists.
Knowledge graphs or semantic layers over structured data (e.g. Snowflake).
Document-processing pipelines for Japanese-language material.
Customising agent environments (skills, MCP servers, hooks, shared context files).
Eval/tracing tooling (e.g., Langfuse, Braintrust, LangSmith).
Azure OpenAI and multi-provider gateway experience.
