About the Role

The Fleet Tire Technician is responsible for maintaining tire inventory records and performing tire diagnostics, repairs, replacements, and disposal for various City vehicles and equipment. This role supports essential city services by ensuring the fleet's tire needs are met.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects and diagnoses damaged tires, identifying the cause of failure and checking for warranty or recall coverage.
  • Repairs and/or disposes of used tires as appropriate.
  • Collects and transports new and used tires between various locations.
  • Maintains used tire inventory records.
  • Mounts and dismounts tires on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs air pressure tire checks in the field at various site locations.
  • Performs daily housekeeping at shop and field sites.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of experience in a related field.
  • Must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of employment if required.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one by hire date.
  • External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite, with no more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
  • Must be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

Skills

  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine tire maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Skill in identifying necessary tire repairs.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Ability to learn Fleet operations scrapping procedures.
  • Ability to mount, dismount, and repair tires on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
  • Experience with commercial, medium-duty and heavy-duty tires.
  • Experience mounting/dismounting steel and aluminum wheels.
  • Experience working with heavy equipment in a shop environment.
  • Experience with retread programs and/or casing evaluation.
  • Experience operating forklifts in a shop or warehouse environment.
  • Experience managing inventory and Shop Supplies.
  • TIA commercial Tire Services (CTS) certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
