About the Role
The Windows Platform and Developers (WPD) organization is establishing a Forward Deployed Engineering team to embed with strategic partners and enterprise developer organizations. This team will build alongside customer engineers within their environments, aiming to ensure their developers and agents run production workloads on Windows. Success is measured by customer adoption of Windows for real workloads. This is a founding team role where engineers will define the engagement model.
Responsibilities
- Own forward-deployed engagements end to end, from discovery to production.
- Discover customer development workflows, constraints, and adoption blockers to establish technical problem statements, baselines, success measures, and plans.
- Design and implement solutions alongside customer engineers, writing automation, configuration, provisioning logic, integrations, and reference implementations with real engineering standards.
- Validate improvements in the customer's environment through agreed-upon measurements.
- Serve as the team's authority on enterprise-scale Windows development, including WSL, WSLC, containers, virtualization, provisioning, build performance, CI/CD, and security/identity controls.
- Diagnose and fix friction points driving developers away from Windows, whether originating from the platform, enterprise configuration, tooling, or gaps between them.
- Build production artifacts such as configuration baselines, provisioning automation, diagnostic tooling, and reference environments.
- Close the loop with product engineering by bringing rigorous evidence (reproductions, traces, measurements, business impact) to Windows, WSL, developer tooling, and security teams to influence their roadmaps.
- Drive fixes, supportability improvements, and telemetry additions through to shipping, maintaining accountability for customer outcomes.
- Identify repeating patterns across customers and convert them into scalable playbooks, reference configurations, tooling, and guidance.
- Transfer knowledge to other Forward Deployed Engineers, Microsoft field and support teams, and product groups.
- Deliver measurable adoption outcomes through production workloads, telemetry, customer evidence, or agreed success measures.
- Build trusted relationships with customer technical leaders, platform teams, and developers.
- Communicate findings, tradeoffs, risks, and progress clearly to customer engineers, engineering leaders, Microsoft field teams, and executives.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
- Must pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Salary/Compensations
- USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year (U.S. typical base pay range)
- USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area base pay range)
