About the Role
This role owns the functional safety analysis of our automated vehicle platform and its sensor suite, including hazard analysis, risk assessment, and determining the safety impact of changes. You will develop methods and tooling to enable safety case engineers to perform their work efficiently and effectively.
Responsibilities
- Own hazard analysis and risk assessment for the platform, deriving safety goals and requirements.
- Drive safety goals and requirements into the architecture and maintain traceability.
- Lead fault and failure analysis across the platform's compute, power, and actuation interfaces, and across the sensor suite.
- Own sensor suite safety, including sensing sufficiency, degradation under adverse conditions, and fault detection/handling.
- Determine the safety impact of changes to hardware, sensors, software, platform variants, and operating domains.
- Own change impact assessment methodology, ensuring it is fast enough to stay on the critical path.
- Develop and own the method for safety case engineers, including reusable analysis structures and a library of platform-level safety items.
- Ship tooling for engineers to run themselves, such as change-impact triage and automated traceability checks.
- Utilize AI tooling for safety analysis, including failure mode generation, gap checking, and requirements interrogation.
- Generate and stress-test failure mode candidates using AI.
- Cross-check analyses for gaps and interrogate large requirement and standards corpora.
- Perform first-pass triage across a large change surface using AI.
- Build and maintain tooling for safety analysis.
Requirements
- 8+ years in functional safety for automotive, automated vehicles, aerospace, industrial automation, or another safety-critical hardware domain.
- Deep hands-on analysis experience rather than process oversight.
- Demonstrated ownership of HARA, FMEA, and FTA on real systems that shipped.
- Strong standards fluency: ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), and UL 4600.
- Experience making release-gating safety calls under time pressure with incomplete information.
- Ability to explain your safety framework and a time you made an error.
- Real hardware and electrical depth: sensors, actuation interfaces, power and grounding, wiring, EMC, redundancy architecture.
- Comfortable working with schematics and oscilloscopes at the vehicle level.
- Programming ability in Python or similar for data analysis and tooling development.
- Experience building tools, scripts, templates, or pipelines adopted by colleagues.
- Temperament to serve internal customers objectively, providing correct and fast results.
- Experience authoring or defending a safety case to an external party (nice to have).
- Experience with fault injection frameworks, HIL, or automated safety verification pipelines (nice to have).
