About the Role
As Senior Industrial Designer, you will own the design process from concept to commercialization, contributing to WAYB's long-term product design vision and leading the hands-on design and execution of new product briefs. This role offers a unique opportunity to impact culture, brand direction, and design language within a nimble innovation lab.
Responsibilities
- Lead industrial design efforts from early concept through commercialization in coordination with the Senior Director of Product.
- Independently own significant portions of the design process to align on product vision, design direction, and key decisions.
- Drive creative problem solving, balancing innovative ideas with manufacturable, quality, cost-effective, and timely solutions.
- Provide clear decision making at every stage of design, balancing aesthetics, features, cost, sustainability, and performance.
- Interpret and implement product briefs.
- Analyze user insights, market trends, and competitor landscape to identify new product opportunities.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, developers, and suppliers to integrate hardgoods and softgoods into high-performing designs.
- Present new product design theory, points of differentiation, and updates during cross-functional phase gate reviews.
- Ensure product designs comply with federal, state, and third-party certification regulation requirements.
- Design products and select materials with a focus on sustainability, performance, and quality, aligning with WAYB's sustainability initiatives.
- Create tech pack drawings for new product development handoff.
- Mentor and manage a small team of designers, providing creative direction, coaching, and performance feedback.
- Own detailed design development and execution across multiple product lines.
- Drive sketching, CAD development, prototyping, CMF exploration, refinement, sample evaluation, and production-ready design documentation.
- Serve as a creative force influencing the future expansion of the WAYB innovation team culture, physical space, and professional influence.
- Support and actively participate in company and employee initiatives that reinforce the company’s commitment to people and planet.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship required.
- 7 or more years of experience in product design.
- Additional experience in project management, development, or sourcing.
- Background check required due to user testing with families.
- Willingness to work varied hours to comply with international time zones.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (approximately 10-20% of the time).
- Experience working and communicating across international teams.
- Located in, or willing to relocate to, the Salt Lake City, Utah area.
