About the Role
NDS is seeking current second-year law students for our family defense summer internship in Manhattan and the Bronx. The Family Defense Practice represents parents in family policing cases and related family court matters. Interns will gain experience mirroring that of an NDS family defense attorney, including legal research, motion writing, client interaction, and court appearances.
Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research and writing.
- Write legal motions.
- Assist in preparing for hearings and trials.
- Work directly with clients.
- Appear on the record pursuant to the student practice order.
- Conduct legal research and writing.
- Attend court appearances.
- Conduct client interviews.
- Perform precinct visits.
- Conduct witness interviews.
- Provide investigation assistance.
- Conduct client visits at jails and juvenile detention facilities.
- Participate in other activities undertaken by NDS staff on behalf of clients.
Requirements
- Current second-year law students.
- Demonstrated commitment to family defense and social justice issues.
- Energy, enthusiasm, and an unwavering commitment to clients.
- Embrace a philosophy of client-centered, community-based, and holistic representation.
