About the Role
Atoms is building Physical AI—real-world robots for industries like food, mining, and transport. Our systems are designed to understand, predict, and control the physical world with precision, enhancing reliability, scalability, and productivity. This role requires deep integration across hardware, software, AI, operations, manufacturing, and real estate, with a focus on deploying and operating robots in real environments.
Responsibilities
- Own a defined scope of the safety case end-to-end, from drafting through sign-off and continuous governance.
- Architect clear argument boundaries and constraints, defining operational conditions, assumptions, exclusions, and hazards.
- Evaluate evidence sufficiency and coverage, scrutinizing metrics and data provenance.
- Construct the Claim-Argument-Evidence (CAE) structure to establish precise validity boundaries.
- Lead formal safety reviews and peer governance, driving feedback to resolution.
- Serve as an independent reviewer for peer scopes.
- Drive rigor in shared methodologies and tooling, preventing process gaps from compromising safety standards.
- Pioneer AI-assisted safety engineering workflows for drafting, hazard analysis, coverage checks, traceability, and claim validation.
Requirements
- 9+ years of cross-functional experience in functional safety, autonomous behavior, and fleet operations, with deep expertise in at least two areas.
- Proven track record as author of record for a structured safety argument (GSN or CAE equivalent) on a production system.
- Dual ownership of hazard analysis and validation, with mastery in safety analysis methods (e.g., HARA, FMEA, FTA) and scenario-based validation strategies.
- Uncompromising rigor regarding data provenance, distinguishing, labeling, and challenging measurements, estimates, and placeholders.
- Courage and integrity to enforce safety gates and speak up when a safety case is unready.
- Proportional mastery of safety standards, applying ISO 26262, ISO 21448 (SOTIF), UL 4600, and SAE J3016 appropriately.
- Statistical fluency in exposure, rare events, and risk metrics, including understanding of surrogate safety measures.
- Functional programming proficiency (e.g., Python) for data analysis, tooling, and leveraging AI assistants.
- Exceptional written precision for clear, unambiguous safety documents.
- Collaborative leadership and team flexibility, balancing ownership with agility to support peer scopes and reviews.
