About the Role

This role will be based in San Francisco and involves building systems that enable knowledge workers to leverage scalable databases without needing to be a DBA. You will be a hands-on technical leader, contributing to architectural direction and roadmap for a new product from alpha to general availability. You will collaborate with early customers to shape foundational technical and product decisions and work on scaling solutions as adoption grows. This is a backend-leaning role with responsibilities spanning the stack, including provisioning and managing Postgres instances, designing schema evolution, and optimizing query execution. You will also contribute to the product by improving table loading, user understanding of operations, and agent data interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Take a new product from alpha to general availability.
  • Work with early customers to understand needs, iterate on feedback, and shape product shipments.
  • Improve query execution, indexing, and client data loading to ensure performance as datasets grow.
  • Build reliable systems for schema changes, concurrent writes, permissions, and recovery.
  • Make database provisioning, migrations, and indexes user-friendly.
  • Automate database provisioning and fleet operations.
  • Strengthen observability and evolve architecture for scalability.
  • Build systems that let knowledge workers leverage databases without becoming DBAs.
  • Set architectural direction and roadmap for a new product.
  • Work directly with early customers to shape technical and product decisions.
  • Scale solutions as adoption and workloads grow.
  • Build systems for provisioning and managing customer Postgres instances.
  • Design how user-defined schemas evolve safely.
  • Make complex queries execute efficiently.
  • Improve how tables load.
  • Enhance user understanding of slow operations.
  • Ensure agents safely work with customer data.
  • Shape architecture and product by developing better abstractions, defaults, or rethinking user workflows.
  • Ship practical solutions and evolve them based on usage.

Requirements

  • Production relational database experience (e.g., Postgres or MySQL).
  • Experience making decisions about schemas and indexes.
  • Experience analyzing database performance.
  • Experience debugging issues involving transactions, locking, or concurrency.
  • Experience beyond accessing a database through an ORM.
  • 10+ years of experience building and operating production software.
  • Track record of setting technical direction.
  • Experience leading complex, cross-team initiatives from concept through delivery.
  • Ability to identify the most important problems to solve.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous goals into a technical strategy.
  • Ability to align engineers and partner teams around a practical plan.
  • Ability to stay hands-on while mentoring others.
  • Experience with design reviews, mentorship, and clear technical guidance.
  • Experience building services that remain correct under concurrency and failure.
  • Ability to reason about retries, partial failures, consistency, and trade-offs in reliable reads and writes.
  • Systematic approach to performance using query plans, traces, profiles, and experiments.
  • Willingness to investigate problems across storage, services, and client code.
  • Interest in understanding who will use the built product.
  • Ability to turn a customer's problem into a technical approach.
  • Ability to recognize when a better default or simpler workflow is more effective.
  • Comfort learning unfamiliar systems and working in client code.
  • Fluency with AI-assisted engineering, using AI to accelerate exploration, implementation, and testing.
  • Responsibility for understanding and validating AI-generated results.
