About the Role
The Commercial Legal Director for Mobility & Payments will support WEX’s Mobility lines of business on complex commercial transactions and product development and launches in the Americas. This role involves providing strategic and tactical advice to commercial, digital, and marketing teams, and collaborating with various corporate functions and external advisors. The position contributes to the Legal Department strategy through process improvement and by partnering with business leaders to solve complex legal matters.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a key legal partner and senior advisor for WEX Mobility operations across the Americas.
- Provide strategic counsel, hands-on commercial drafting and negotiations, product life-cycle support, and team leadership.
- Collaborate with colleagues in other areas of the Legal Department to identify risks and provide comprehensive legal advice.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of legal professionals, overseeing work output.
- Cultivate strong advisory relationships with Mobility executives and cross-functional leaders.
- Support the Legal Leadership Team in executing strategic initiatives.
- Engage, instruct, and oversee outside counsel and their work product.
- Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements.
- Drive legal due diligence and integration for M&A activity.
- Support high-stakes RFP responses.
- Review marketing initiatives.
- Identify and lead process improvements across the team and the Legal Department.
- Create and update contract templates and negotiation playbooks.
- Deliver solution-oriented guidance from initial product inception through commercial launch and ongoing technical evolution.
- Draft and maintain product-related documentation.
- Proactively identify, manage, and escalate business risks.
- Guide team members in risk management.
- Manage pre-litigation disputes and contractual queries from customers or partners.
Requirements
- J.D. required
- 10 years of legal experience, ideally with in-house experience
- Licensed in at least one U.S. state
- Experience in payments and/or financial services industries and related laws and regulations
- Extensive experience in structuring, drafting and negotiating a wide range of complex commercial transactions (both sales and buy sides), including those for financial services, digital payment, technology, and with the public sector
- Understanding of the legal and practical components of a product life cycle and experience in providing legal advice throughout the cycle
- Experience in managing and supervising others
- Experience with legal matter management system, contract lifecycle management systems, and AI tools and capabilities, with a keenness to experiment and incorporate AI into daily workflows
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellence in resourceful problem solving, detailed analysis, and issue resolution
- Excellent ability to understand complex commercial, product and technical issues and business metrics
- Effective organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritization skills
- Collaborative and can work as part of a team, while also being an independent self-starter
- Ability to successfully lead process improvement initiatives that drive efficiencies impacting the legal team and the organization
