About the Role
The Engineering Department Manager (EDM) is a leader responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the engineering team, assigning engineering resources, and ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. This role reports to the VP of Product Design.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical guidance and support to team members.
- Ensure processes, Standard Operating Procedures, and rigorous design flows are followed.
- Maintain effective communication between the engineering team and other departments.
- Serve as the point of contact for technical inquiries or issues.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to align engineering efforts with business objectives.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the engineering team.
- Oversee the development and execution of projects.
- Review ongoing efforts and rectify issues.
- Support internal and external design and development reviews with documentation.
- Ensure adherence to quality standards, design and development processes, and standard operating procedures.
- Ensure the engineering team remains focused on projects, company goals, and objectives.
- Verify the technical accuracy and validity of methods used by the team.
- Ensure the team has adequate means and tools for efficient project execution and product development.
- Determine equipment, SW licenses, staff, and training needs.
- Assist in project resource allocations, ensuring efficient engineer allocation and balanced workloads.
- Review team members’ work schedules and tasks.
- Monitor and evaluate engineers’ progress.
- Support and promote a culture that rewards motivation and cooperation.
- Coordinate work with other managers and staff.
- Participate in proposals and trade studies, including evaluating contractor and subcontractor proposals for technical feasibility.
- Review contract/proposals/opportunities, focusing on SOW, technical requirements, data requirements, and statement of compliance before acceptance.
- Transfer accepted contracts/proposals/opportunities to the engineering team.
- Evaluate and approve strategies to bridge technical, programmatic, and personnel gaps in the engineering team.
Requirements
- Masters or PhD degree in engineering, computer science, or equivalent.
- 15 years of industry experience.
- C, C++ programming expertise.
- Python, Matlab, or other scripting and test languages expertise.
- Experience bringing up PCBA in at least 2 of the bare-metal, FreeRTOS, Linux, or similar operating systems environments.
- Understanding of real-time constraints and requirements.
- Experience with code repository tools, issue tracking, and agile development processes.
- Experience in the production of qualified hardware/systems for space.
- Capable of multi-tasking; working on multiple projects and supporting production activities.
- Strong technical background; capable of quickly learning new technologies.
- Proficient in personal computing skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance.
- Must be a U.S. Person (US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual) to conform to U.S. Government export regulations (ITAR and EAR).
