About the Role
This role operates in a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Shelter, providing essential meal preparation and health & safety support within a dynamic kitchen environment. The position requires a compassionate individual with a strong understanding of food security, health protocols, and a commitment to serving diverse clients with dignity and respect.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Food Security Coordinator to provide nutritionally sound meals that meet client dietary, cultural, and religious needs.
- Prepare meals based on pre-determined menus and support with posting menus.
- Support Food Security programming and day-to-day kitchen operations.
- Receive and sort food deliveries and supplies.
- Serve meals and snacks to clients within the Shelter.
- Assist with meal preparation during special events, workshops, client activities, and emergencies.
- Prepare nutritious snacks for children to promote healthy eating habits.
- Support clients in accessing food resources respectfully and with dignity.
- Utilize the food waste tracking tool to ensure proper resource use.
- Follow defined Health and Safety protocols in the kitchen.
- Uphold health and safety standards, safe food handling, and hygiene guidelines.
- Identify and report food safety concerns, equipment issues, or hazards immediately.
- Clean kitchen, pantry, and storage areas according to health and safety standards.
- Maintain up-to-date First Aid CPR and food handling certifications.
- Be knowledgeable of Canadian Dietary Guidelines and Canada Food Guide.
- Participate in updated training as required.
- Uphold client confidentiality in accordance with organizational policies.
- Maintain current knowledge of food security, food justice, and trauma-informed practice.
- Attend team building, training, in-services, and community outreach projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Completed post-secondary education in a related field such as Culinary Arts, Food Security, and/or Food Justice.
- Knowledge of the Canada Food Guide.
- Valid Safe Food Handling Certificate.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working with diverse communities in food catering/communal settings.
- Completed CPR Level C and First Aid certifications.
- Willing to provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Checks (PVSC).
Skills
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Outlook and Word).
- Strong work ethic and ability to take ownership of tasks.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Comfortable working in a pet-friendly environment.
- Understanding of how food security threatens the safety and security of women and children.
- Comprehensive knowledge of kitchen health and safety protocols and procedures.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Effective communication with colleagues and clients.
- Enthusiasm and passion for food service.
- Ability to work from an intersectional feminist, anti-racist, anti-oppressive lens, leveraging a trauma-informed approach.
- High degree of confidentiality and discretion.
- Experience working with survivors of violence and their dependents (asset).
