About the Role

The Area Manager, Caretaking is responsible for providing timely, efficient, and effective caretaking services to assigned shifts of the St. George campus. This role involves supervising direct reports to oversee caretaking services, including cleaning, responding to campus needs, waste management, and employee relations on a 24/7 basis. The position also includes hiring and training staff, enforcing health and safety standards, managing budgets, and participating in quality assurance programs.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains all service schedules for assigned buildings.
  • Deploys staff to deliver core services and meet operational requirements, adjusting schedules for absences and leaves.
  • Resolves technical and staff-related issues promptly to minimize delays.
  • Stays current on new procedures and work methods, preparing reports and integrating new methods while addressing health, safety, and ergonomic concerns.
  • Ensures workplace health and safety standards are maintained, enforcing WHMIS and OHSA regulations.
  • Serves as an active member of the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
  • Reviews and approves employee timesheets, submitting them for payroll processing and handling pay adjustments for unplanned events.
  • Tracks and monitors supply purchases budget (approx. $300K - $400K annually) and salary expenditures for indirect reports (approx. $2.5M - $4.0M annually), making budget reassignment recommendations.
  • Checks work ticket status in SAP, arranges requests with supervisors and service partners, and reviews financial records.
  • Maintains Key and Fob access control for in-house and contracted sites.
  • Manages staff to ensure work tasks are completed on schedule and standards/policies are followed.
  • Resolves informal complaints from unionized staff in consultation with Human Resources and Labour Relations.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing a large, unionized workforce, preferably in a facility management setting (caretaking operations, waste/recycling collection) or not-for-profit/public service organization.
  • Responsibility for a budget of not less than $2M.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to create charts, graphs, and reports from several software programs.
  • Ability to analyze information and create comparable for work loading job assignments.
  • Mathematical aptitude.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure of multiple demands, strict deadlines, and frequently changing priorities.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • Ability to motivate staff and demonstrate effective leadership.
  • Good presentation skills preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Salary/Compensations

  • $83,560 - $97,486
  • $83,560 - $139,264
