About the Role

Mercor is seeking a Senior HR Business Partner to support the Delivery organization, which is central to transforming customer demand into high-quality human data. This role requires a deep understanding of the operational environment, customer needs, and business economics to advise leaders on critical people decisions, including talent acquisition, development, performance management, and organizational structure. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, challenging leaders with practical recommendations grounded in business realities.

Responsibilities

  • Partner directly with Delivery leadership to advise on talent, organization design, management, performance, and workforce decisions during organizational scaling.
  • Gain a deep understanding of accounts, teams, customers, and work types to ensure people recommendations are tailored to the specific business context.
  • Elevate performance standards by helping managers differentiate between exceptional, strong, and below-par performance, ensuring decisions are evidence-based and timely.
  • Identify and develop high-performing individuals by creating meaningful growth opportunities through larger accounts, expanded scope, new challenges, internal mobility, or management roles.
  • Coach managers on providing feedback, setting expectations, improving team effectiveness, handling difficult conversations, addressing performance issues, and demonstrating leadership behaviors.
  • Proactively identify retention risks by understanding contributing factors such as scope, compensation, manager quality, account experience, career progression, and market competition, and collaborate with leaders on interventions.
  • Shape the evolving organization by partnering on role clarity, organization design, succession planning, spans and layers, leadership changes, and talent movement.
  • Apply a people-centric approach to staffing and workload, identifying when persistent workload, account design, insufficient capacity, or operational friction creates talent problems, and work with leadership to address root causes.
  • Effectively manage challenging people situations, including performance concerns, conduct issues, organizational changes, role adjustments, and exits, ensuring speed, consistency, and sound judgment.
  • Implement talent and performance mechanisms for Delivery, adapting company-wide approaches to be practical for a fast-paced operating organization without creating unnecessary process.
  • Identify emerging patterns in talent, performance, retention, and employee signals to alert Delivery leadership to changing dynamics and areas requiring intervention.
  • Build new mechanisms, manager tools, or talent practices as needed, comfortable creating initial versions and refining them through practical application.

Requirements

  • Human data industry experience is required, with experience in companies delivering human data or expertise for AI systems (e.g., AI training data, expert data, RLHF, model evaluation, data annotation/labeling, or similar human data operations).
  • Understanding of how businesses delivering human-generated data, expert data, model evaluations, RLHF, data annotation, or similar services to AI customers operate.
  • 8+ years of HRBP experience, serving as the primary People partner to senior leaders and independently managing complex organizational and talent decisions.
  • Experience supporting operations or delivery organizations where performance is closely tied to customers, quality, speed, capacity, and execution.
  • Experience in high-growth startups, comfortable with rapid organizational change, ambiguous ownership, and evolving business landscapes.
  • Strong business judgment, with the ability to understand operational dynamics, differentiate symptoms from root causes, and provide clear recommendations.
  • High performance orientation, comfortable distinguishing performance levels, investing in top talent, and directly addressing underperformance.
  • Excellent manager coaching skills, capable of improving manager effectiveness and challenging leaders when their approach contributes to problems.
  • Strong talent instinct, with the ability to recognize individuals with high potential, understand retention risks, and create growth opportunities.
  • Proven ability as a 0->1 builder, creating talent, manager, or organizational practices with limited existing infrastructure.
  • Operator mindset, ensuring solutions are practical and effective by staying close to the work.
  • Direct and low ego communication style, handling disagreements constructively and prioritizing the best outcome.
  • Ability to work in the San Francisco office five days a week.
