About the Role
Perform highly specialized field inspections across New York City to safeguard neighboring structures from the impacts of demolition, excavation, and construction. Operate under NYC Building Code Chapter 33 (Section 3309), conducting photo surveys, vibration monitoring, and optical monitoring to document conditions and track structural movements.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive interior and exterior physical surveys of neighboring structures.
- Document existing structural defects, cracks, and settlement using photography and field notes.
- Prepare Pre-Construction Survey Reports for submission to the NYC Department of Buildings.
- Install, calibrate, and maintain seismographs and wireless vibration monitors.
- Set up, read, and maintain optical monitoring targets, prisms, and crack gauges.
- Download raw field data, perform basic calculations, and check alignment metrics.
- Notify project manager and construction crew of vibration or displacement threshold exceedances.
- Coordinate property entry with neighboring owners.
- Travel independently to construction sites throughout the five NYC boroughs.
- Execute scheduled readings and routine sensor maintenance.
Requirements
- 1–3 years of experience in structural inspection, land surveying, or technical construction monitoring within an urban environment.
- Hands-on proficiency with specialized instrumentation, including Instantel seismographs, and crack meters.
- Solid understanding of NYC DOB Chapter 33 rules regarding the protection of adjacent public and private property.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills for interacting with tenants, building owners, and site superintendents.
- Ability to walk extensive project sites, climb ladders, work in active construction zones, and handle outdoor weather conditions.
