About the Role

The Senior Design Manager is responsible for design decisions related to a portfolio of datacenter projects, including new construction, expansions, retrofits, and upgrades. They act as an industry professional progressing towards becoming a recognized expert on datacenter design, critically assessing decisions and applying Equinix standards and regulations. This role manages the relationship and output of key design partners and equipment suppliers.

Responsibilities

Owns and leads a design process, interacting with Architectural, Mechanical and Electrical Partners (MEPs), and other design partners to deliver world-class datacenters with a focus on technical excellence, resilience, and cost management.
Reviews and contributes to the development of globally standardized tools, techniques, and processes for managing and reporting the design process.
Works with peers in other regions to drive consistency and technical excellence in design and delivery practices.
Considers the global applicability of design decisions, innovations, or standards changes.
Obtains site-specific conditions, utility design, costs, and availability, liaising with planning authorities and local logistics.
Provides locally informed and compliant infrastructure design and supply information, collaborating with the master planning function.
Provides local design engineering to support site-specific changes to templates.
Reviews the masterplan for delivery and submits to senior staff for approval.
Conducts the master planning of expansion portfolios using global design standards and templates, incorporating regional information.
Generates project visualization, initial models using reference design templates, and cost estimates for business case inception.
Liaises with regional teams to incorporate local infrastructure into the design.
Liaises with construction cost teams regionally and globally to assist business case generation.
Maintains relationships with internal technical staff, external design partners, construction management, commercial management, and regional P&L holders.
Leverages center of excellence teams and senior design staff to augment technical expertise.
Manages internal and external resources through influence and competencies.
Indirectly manages experienced electrical and mechanical engineering staff to deliver world-class datacenter designs on time and to budget.
Directly responsible for managing the design schedule for assigned projects, ensuring timely creation and review of Basis of Designs (BODs), REIC Submissions, and design documentation.
Works with construction managers, general contractors, and subcontractors to deliver projects during construction and ensure proper documentation and closeout.
Manages design budgets and controls change management requests during the construction phase, in consultation with the Construction Manager.
Works with regional design teams and Construction Managers to deliver Concept Designs and Standards.
Manages design costs to ensure appropriate balancing of cost flexibility and global standardization.
Stays up-to-date on advancements in design investigated by centers of excellence teams.
Ensures designs meet Equinix’s Global Design Standards and business needs for capacity, density, and function.

Requirements

Proven years experience in a Design MEP Firm or in the design team of a Mission Critical Building operator or subcontractor, OR proven years experience as an Architectural lead in a Mission Critical Architectural Design Practice preferred.
Architects to hold RA or AIA.
PE desirable but not essential.
