About the Role
BrightEdge, the innovation and venture capital arm of the American Cancer Society, seeks a Venture Fellow to support investment and innovation activities. This role involves conducting diligence on prospective companies, developing landscape analyses, evaluating scientific data, and assessing market insights to inform investment decisions. Fellows will also support innovation programming, engage with founders, and gain exposure to venture decision-making processes.
Responsibilities
- Support investment diligence, data collection, and analytical tasks, including reviewing scientific literature, intellectual property, competitive landscape, clinical data, commercial activity, industry trends, and stakeholder interviews.
- Synthesize findings into written reports and presentations to inform investment decisions.
- Support the development of a focused investment thesis in an area aligned with BrightEdge priorities.
- Identify key unmet needs, emerging technologies, and strategic areas of opportunity.
- Deliver insights through structured reports and presentations.
- Develop “watch lists” of emerging oncology therapeutic, diagnostic, device, and health tech companies.
- Support the planning, coordination, and execution of BrightEdge events, including preparing materials and managing logistics.
- Gain direct exposure to BrightEdge networks of industry experts and ecosystem partners.
Requirements
- Minimum Bachelor's Degree.
- Actively pursuing an advanced degree (Master’s, PhD or MD or equivalent) in an oncology-related field or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Deep technical background in life sciences and/or healthcare technologies with a strong understanding of cancer biology.
- Business experience in a startup or innovation setting (venture capital, business development, technology transfer, licensing, finance, operations, consulting) is a plus.
- Ability to drive programming without much oversight.
- Flexibility and comfort with change and ambiguity.
- Team player with low ego.
- Entrepreneurial drive and passion for biomedical innovation and its commercialization.
- Eagerness to learn new topics, methods, and tools.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including report writing, summarizing, and presentation creation.
- Analytical/evaluative thinking and excellent attention to detail.
- Minimal travel required (less than 5%).
